Baked Potato - to foil or not?

What makes a great baked potato?
I normally microwave but doing them for visitors this weekend so want nice fluffy middle and crispy skin. DH says his mum's are so good cos she wraps in tin foil in oven!! Do you foil??

Prick skin, no foil, bung in oven. Had them last night, they were crisp on the outside, fluffy inside and utterly delicious. Grin

I usually microwave and then place under the grill (turning it after 5 mins) and get a lovely crispy skin.

Haven't done them in foil for years as don't tend to have time.

They won't be crispy if you wrap them in foil. Definitely without. Stick a metal skewer through them to reduce cooking time too.

I thought foil was for bonfires. I remember we used wrap them and place them near the edge of a bonfire as a child. Never bothered indoors though.

No foil, never even thought of it. I do stick them on metal skewers though, seems to help cook the middle a bit quicker so the skin is crispy but not too tough.

No no no. Pop a slather of olive oil, bit of salt, prick all over and give them hour and a half to two hours for perfection. I hate microwave jps!

I have also never heard of metal skewer idea but I will definitely try it out.

Scrub, put on tray, cook at 160 fan for 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on size. Will be fluffy and crispy. Mmm!

No foil.

Price all over with fork. Wash with water and roll in salt. Couple of hours at 150 degrees. Lush.

I microwave till softish inside , then pop them in the oven for 30 minutes , straight onto the oven shelf. Always crispy

no foil, such a waste all tin foil is used up for my hat anyway

I sometimes use a method I think was nigella lawsons - wash them in the morning dry thoroughly, rub in salt then leave out until ready to cook in the evening, I think removing the moistute from the skin helps it crisp up!

I foil, prick them, salt, olive oil, wrap them up, shove in oven. I just think they come out better, I only do them without foil if I'm being lazy. I think the foil keeps the steam in and makes them fluffier.

Do people really actually wash baking potatoes?

I just cut a cross in mine and bang them in the oven for an hour and 10 minutes. They've alwAys been fab.

Slice the potatoes as in the picture. Microwave for 15 + minutes. Oven for 20 minutes until crisp and delicious!!!

My timings might actually be wrong - I just microwave until soft, then oven until crisp!

I always foil mine! Prick, salt and a drizzle of oil then wrap in foil. Put in oven for 2 hrs. The best baked potato ever. Crispy outside, fluffy inside! It's the salt and oil that keeps them from going soggy.

Another one here who microwaves until soft and then throw in op of oven without foil/oil or anything. Always fluffy and crispy.
