Do you cook things for your children that you don't eat?

Reason I am asking is that I am not a big meat eater and have never cooked lamb in my oven as I hate it. Smell makes me sick. I mainly cook chicken.
My dh thinks it is bad that I don't cook lamb for my children and I should let them try it. I think I should make things we all like and don't think it's a bad thing that they don't eat loads of meat.
What do you think?

No, I wouldn't go to the trouble of cooking a joint of meat if I knew that not everybody would eat it - especially as there are probably other meats that you will all enjoy.

The only thing I ever cook for DS that I don't eat myself are peas and baked beans - not exactly difficult Everything else I cook we both enjoy.

Yes, all the time. I don't eat fish fingers for a start! Also, the pasta they have is quite bland.

I don't eat a lot of red meat either and, consequently, neither do the boys. They eat more fish than meat (though mainly only cod in various forms and tuna). The main meat they have is chicken and then sausages (100% meat ones from our butcher). Oh, and I am in the process of trying to get them to eat bolognese - having that tonight!

I don't see anything wrong with what you are doing.

would your dh cook lamb something for them e.g. lamb stew?

My dh loves prawns etc and cooks them in paella etc, but I don't eat them ( I pick them out an put them on his plate )

HE should cook it then
I cook pasta for my children, which I cannot stand. And they have ketchup which I am practically phobic about, I detest it so much.

Yes, often dish out carefully and lovingly prepared platefuls of something I wouldn't eat to mindees.

Likewise, I often scoff things I would be horrified to hand out to children.

It's very much do as I say not as I do, round here.

i feed my dd's tuna a lot even though i hate it... because it is a great healthy nutritious food which is very easy!! I want them to like it (and luckily they do)

My ds would live on tuna, but I thought you were meant to only have it twice a week, because of mercury.According to Observer food supplement last week, it is highest of all in Omega stuff

I'm vegetarian, but cook meat for dh and dd. I can't say I enjoy it, but I don't feel I can impose my lifestyle on them ... and as I do all the cooking, I get to do the meat. I do make dh clean the roasting tins and grill pan afterwards though!

But that's me - if you don't feel you can cook it for them then don't. They can have it if you go out for a meal, or dh can cook it for them.

If lamb is the only thing they're missing out on then it's no real biggie.

I only cook what I like.
Chef's perogative.
If they don't want it....all the more for me.

If he wants them to eat it,he should cook it.

I cook with mushrooms which I don't like and some others. If something would make me vomit, then I wouldn't I guess. However, I cannot stand the smell of bananas and I regularly deal with those for him. Barf.

I cook meat for the kids and I don't eat it.Only ever do very small portions as dd2 doesn't really like it either which only leaves dd1 to eat it!

Most of the stuff I make for DS i wouldnt eat as i am MEGA fussy. Plus i mainly eat salads, vegetables and meat, and when i have meat is generally steak which i eat rare so my foods arent suitable to share with DS really, so we tend to eat seperately (plus i work nightshifts so dont really want my tea at 5pm!)

So, to make up for this, i take him out for meals pretty regularly, and always choose him something that I would not normally make. So next time you go out for lunch/tea, choose them lamb and see how it goes.

could be an expensive mistake, though

and ruin a meal out

Yes, but its a good way of trying new things.

I tend to choose things that i know he will like with something different on the side, so he will still eat if it all goes wrong!

EG from the last 2 weeks - steak pie (already likes) with green beans (new try) and carrots (new try)
or
Duck (new try) with celeriac mash (already likes)

(Results for those who are interested - he now likes duck and green beans but still wont eat bloody carrots!)

Plus there is always the free bits of bread they give you at the start of the meal for DS to munch on if he really doesnt like what i get him, and you can always ask for more!

oh - id just like to point out that i have tried green beans on him before but he still wont eat them so i always choose them (though my mum ALWAYS put bloody cauliflower cheese on my plate when it was going, and i STILL dont like it!)

And he does eat cooked carrots but in this particular restaurant they were cooked orange glazed rather than just boiled.
