I always feel good if I am eating ahigh fibre diet but need some ideas on how to increase my intake - esp. with the recent findings regarding breast cancer. I eat well and I am trying to be healthy so would love to up my fibre without upping my cals.

I eat vegetables and I try to et fruit (but I don't ever really fancy it, I make myself have it.)

I was wondering where you healthy types get fibre in your diet. Any tips woudl realy help.

Thanks In Advance.....

If you don't like fruit is it because of the texture? - try making smoothies with frozen or tinned fruit, you'll be on five a day in no time. All the supermarkets sell bags/boxes of frozen fruits. Just add apple or cranberry juice or OJ.

Good old bowl of fruit and fibre or bran flakes followed by prunes and just maybe (if you have room) Wholemeal toast oh and to wash it down a big glass of OJ. Put it this way if I ate all this I wouldnt need to eat all day because I would be on the loo all day

Fruit & Veg (I always aim for 5)

Brown bread (wholemeal or granary)

'healthy' cereal for breakfast - weetabix, fruit & fibre etc

and, if I'm feeling good, brown pasta.

I like the idea of smoothies!

I only eat brown carb - I'm a future diabetic, so can't really eat white carb. If I'm baking, I swap half the white flour for brown.

I also get fibre from:

  • home made muesli, with lots of seeds in it
  • fruit
  • veg
  • beans etc
  • dried fruit
  • seeds on things

I probably eat too much fibre, if anything.

Oranges are good because they have both fibre and fluid. If you increase your fibre intake, you need to make sure you are taking plenty of fluids too otherwise you can end up constipated!

The fluid/fibre relationship is why it's best to get fibre from 'lush' things like fruit and veg rather than supplements which would require you to drink lots.

DimpledThighs, four of my grandparents were type 2 diabetic. Both my parents were type 2 diabetic. Hence, I am a future diabetic.

My GTT in my pregnancy with DS1 was ok, though, so I don't think I'm very close now. I'd like to stave off diabetes until I'm in my 50s, at least. Long-term diabetes can be very hard on your extremeties, eyes, and heart (probably other bits, too).

(It's probably worth noting, anyway - really old people are either really thin and on those scary-looking drinks in tins, or heavy, and diabetic.)

For breakfast I have bran flakes.

A typical lunch will be a homemade tuna salad followed by 1 apple, 2 plums, 2 tangerines, 1 banana and a small bunch of grapes plus I drink a homemade vegetable soup which contains tomatoes, celery, carrots, swede and onions.

For dinner, if I'm having a hot meal, I will fill half my plate with vegetables like carrots, broccoli, swede, cauliflower, green beans, cabbage, peas or spinach.

I'm as regular as clockwork too.
