OK... so I got the slow cooker out and decided to cook a batch lot of chilli. All good. It's been on 5 hours and the recipe says to add the beans and....
a friend had given me some 85% chocolate so added double the amount, as I've doubled up the recipe.

All it tastes of is chocolate! Do I leave it to cook some more and it will get better? I was expecting it to be barely noticeable but noooo...

{http://www.goodhousekeeping.co.uk/food/recipes/slow-cooker-chilli-con-carne?click=main_sr here]] is the recipe, I more or less followed it to the letter.

Do you add dark chocolate to chilli? Does it taste of chocolate?!

50g of chocolate so about half a bar? Hmmm I would have used about 4/8 squares in that much. Can you add another tin of toms or some Chipotle to balance it?

50g was 4 big squares of a Lindt bar.

I think I am going to add something... more spice of yes chipotle, thanks, that's an idea, I have a chipotle rub/marinade... I'll shove some of that in!

I just wasn't expecting the chocolate taste!

You could add in a bit more chopped tomato - about half a can - and see if that helps

The reason for adding chocolate is to make the sauce look better not for taste so you probably shouldn't double the amount I would have just used 1 square.

If you are using tinned kidney beans, make sure you wash the kidney beans thoroughly. If you are putting in tomatoes, the chocolate is used as a substitute for sugar to counteract the bitterness of the tomatoes. I've just decided what I'm making for dinner tomorrow. Grin

cd oh dear! I doubled up and put too much in didn't I?! 4 big squares!

I think I rescued it as much as I could by spicing it up, we're not having it till tomorrow night, so hopefully it'll be ok! It tasted better when I'd added some chipotle rub and black pepper.

coolio yes always wash my kidney beans. I've learnt something on the chocolate thought... one square or maybe two, not 4!

I use cocoa powder in chilli and that works very well. Gives it an earthy taste. It's not just for looks!

It isn't just for looks at all!

I use cocoa powder too. Surely chocolate bar would make the chilli taste overly sweet.

I think you're only supposed to add a small amount of very dark chocolate, so shouldn't make it too sweet. I add a little sugar or something sweet, anyway.

I use coco powder or chuck in a square or two of 70% chocolate.

Can you really taste it strongly? Add some more toms or red wine (I know it's not traditional but I like it) and some spies and reduce down a bit.

The liquid is always a bit yuk isn't it, sort of starchy ... I always rinse them but it sounds like your DH has survived!

Sounds like you made a good rescue. I've never used chocolate. I put a bit of sweetness in with tomato ketchup, just a good squirt.

Is there a reason for washing the kidney beans from a tin? Just starchy salty water. Nothing bad happens if you don't rinse.

TortoiseVTurtle · 03/08/2016 15:43

I use cocoa powder rather than chocolate. Hopefully you can rescue it.

Yes, we had it on Monday and it was different but good! Smile
