Tons past their date...

I just cleaned out my cupboard Nd have found a load of tins - chickpeas, coconut milk, etc. - way past their sell by/use by (doesn't specify) date.

In the past I would have just chucked them (blush) but I'm trying to be more sensible.

Is there a guideline I can use (ie all will be fine as they are tinned / wouldn't use certain pulses / chuck them all)?

(And obviously be better in future grin!)

Grrr - title should say "tins"

If the cans have not yet "popped" and the contents smell OK when you open the can......and if you are cooking what is inside.....and it tastes OK, I would use it. Perhaps not if it is tinned fish (remember the John West Salmon botulism case from 1978).

Great, thanks. They look fine (and most are max 6 months "out". I agree with you re the fish!

Oh gosh yes, they will be fine!

6 months! They'll be absolutely fine - I thought you meant years...

As long as they haven't popped. I never look at dates on cans...

Fabulous! I didn't until the other day - hence the clear out! But I begrudge just dumping all that food!
