I am not a vegan. My brother is. Every year I try my best and make him a somewhat tasty nut roast... I really feel a bit sorry for him because although he is getting tasty and homemade vegan food, it is the same thing every year...

So does this menu sound reasonable for this year?/

Fruit for starter - easy I know but fruit is just the best anyway

Miso soup

A mushroom wellington - this is where I am struggling!!! can you do vegan pastry well?? Can you buy it? Does anyone have any recipes for it??

Then for pud baked spiced figs with alpro custard.

HELP ME!!!!

Sounds good, yes to vegan pastry - just google recipes. Marge instead of butter

How lovely you are, OP. Though judging by another thread running no here at the moment, there may be a few posters coming along soon telling you he should bring his own food.

Is miso sou the only soup he likes? It's just that most vegetable soups can easily be vegan. In fact thinking about it, most of the soups I make are. A vegetable soup (parsnip, sweet potato, beetroot) might just might have a bit more oomph to it than miso, which is ok, but more suited as a base for Japanese style dishes.

Hairy bikers have a brilliant apple and parsnip soup recipe that's lovely and Christmassy and can easily be made vegan (substitute butter with Vitalite and leave out the milk).

Jus roll pastry is your friend. All but the butter puff are suitable for vegans. Watch out for the miso though as some contain fish (bonita I think is the ingredient)

Jamie Oliver has done a full vegan menu for Christmas as well which might be worth a look.

Depending on what pastry is needed for the Wellington, the Jus Rol chilled ready made pastries are vegan, at least some of them are!

Also, a sauce for that mushroom wellington??? drain the excess liquid from the sautéd mushrooms, mixt with cream of coconut sachet, and about 30 mls of whiskey. And if it still needs a bit more, another spoon of mushroom soup. There'll be no complaints that it's bland.

I sometimes add a spoon of powdered tomato soup to the wholewheat flour pastry, gives it a buzz.

JusRol is vegan (normal puff, double check as sometimes companies change ingredients!) I use the fridge ready rolled one

I would just be pleased you were going to the effort of cooking for me

I have similar OP, my sister is coming for Christmas Day lunch & is vegan. We are not having a starter but melon is a good choice & she brings her own main course but I make sure the gravy is vegan so she joins us with the veg & potatoes & I usually have a bit of the vegan main as well. Instead of a Christmas cake I do a lovely vegan lemon cake with vegan buttercream & decorate it & we usually have that instead of a traditional cake.

Rather than do separate things I try to veganise what I can so we all eat the same things where possible. It means no goose fat for the roasties & no mince pies or pavlova etc but its not a problem at all.

Wow... I've got jusrol in the fridge already... Presumed it was full of butter, never thought to read the ingredients ha you learn something new every day. Well i was thinking of doing a leek and potato soup sans cream but i really really really adore miso soup so I wanted an excuse to make it lol maybe not the most Christmassy though. Soups are easy enough so I might decide closer to the time.

mince that sounds so good but wont the coconut (and this is going to make me sound stoopid) make it taste coconut-y??

there may be a few posters coming along soon telling you he should bring his own food

. It's Christmas. I'm making dinner so I'm going to make it for everyone. No exclusions.

Oh I will veganise as much as I can but I'm fairly adept at preparing everything ahead of time and freezing it all so I'm not having to cook 17 things at the same time lol

Yes to mushroon sauce, it makes all the difference. I make mine with mushrooms, stock, flour and a lot of sherry.

When I make potato and leek soup, I use half water and half coconut milk (koko, fresh or long life) I use that instead of milk anyway (cereal etc) and it gives it a more creamy taste

Could you do a variation on Delia's mushroom en croute with sunflower spread (pure or similar) & soya cream? With ready made puff pastry.

I have made vegan pastry by the way, using pure marg instead of butter, I made mince pies to offer a vegan xmas visitor. Used this recipe (with no egg wash), it was good.
