On Boxing Day were are having Christmas baked ham (which will have been made on Christmas Eve) bread sauce flavoured potato dauphinoise and... what vegetable? I was thinking of roast sprouts from Nigellissima, but unsure whether that would go or not? Any ideas? Thanks!

I love braised red cabbage this time of year, especially with ham and beef

Peas or green beans.

Definitely something fresh and green. Ham is very salty, dauphinoise quite heavy and rich. Maybe even green salad? Steamed broccoli?

Asparagus or green beans.

Buttered leeks. My favourite!

Would say creamed leeks but not with dauphinoise. Second the red cabbage suggestion - sharpness will cut through the rich cream etc.

Red cabbage and garlicky green beans

I'd go for something to cut the richness, so maybe Savoy cabbage, broccoli or French green beans.

I'm of the opinion that sprouts go with nothing as they're foul little balls of bitterness.

Red cabbage and buttery green beans, do you have a recipe though for the bread sauce dauphinoise?

Chimchar Sat 12-Dec-15 19:41:19

I would say broccoli. But I'm no foodie.

PhoenixReisling Sat 12-Dec-15 20:21:54

French beans and some red cabbage!

AnnPerkins Sat 12-Dec-15 20:24:02

Has to be peas. They go so well with the ham and the dauphinoise potatoes.

bigkidsdidit Sat 12-Dec-15 20:25:33

Broccoli and green beans

Braised red cabbage.

That would probably be my death row last meal.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff Sat 12-Dec-15 20:28:02

Something green would be lovely. I'd go for green beans and some broccoli. Sounds absolutely delicious OP!

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes Sat 12-Dec-15 20:30:43

Something very plain and simple, like peas or broccoli. No other butter or cream, it would be too rich. I'd prefer plain potatoes if I'm honest.

We had ham, dauphinoise and plain green beans today, seemed a good balance.

FurryDogMother Sat 12-Dec-15 20:35:19

If everyone who'll be eating likes sprouts, then I'd stick with your original idea - I love them!

dodobookends Sat 12-Dec-15 20:35:48

Baby broad beans

iwantgin Sat 12-Dec-15 20:36:09

I would choose French green beans. Plain as everything else is very well flavoured.

I do like braised red cabbage too, but not sure if I would serve it up with thiscombo

calzone Sat 12-Dec-15 20:37:11

Green beans

BrandNewAndImproved Sat 12-Dec-15 20:37:16

Broccoli or asparagus or both.

Jw35 Sat 12-Dec-15 20:46:02

Carrots and green beans

Leeks with wholegrain mustard done in the microwave, and celery and carrots baked together in a foil package at the same time as the potatoes dauphinoise.
