I just discovered I really like truffles

Really really like truffles!

I discovered this via a £3 jar of truffle pesto.

What other cheapie truffle things should I get hold of and inhale like a mad woman

And if I were going to drop hints to DP about what slightly pricier truffle treat to get me for my birthday what should it be?

On a trip to London, I discovered truffle flavoured crisps that they sell in Fortnum & Mason, £3 for a big bag and super tasty. Not found them anywhere else though

Does anyone know what a real truffle tastes like, the ones the piggies root out.

Truffle oil is quite good to drizzle on pasta and soups. I haven't tried this but it looks interesting www.amazon.co.uk/White-Truffle-Oil-Super-Concentrated/dp/B004EEXCVW?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

Truffle oil will intensify the flavour of mushroom dishes, so try in omelette or scrambled eggs, or a swirl in fresh mushroom soup.

Truffle crisps sound amazing and I work kinda near F&M so great idea- my next mission.

I wasn't sure truffle oil would be worth it but it seems people think otherwise so I'll check it out. Any brands/ words to look out for ie virgin extra type terminology?

As for truffle country...If only I'd made this discovery before having DD! Might have to wait until she's old enough I'm brave enough to take her abroad to come along or be left with grandparents. Only another year or two...

You can get jars of truffle and mushroom paste in Sainsburys. It's this brand.
I top it up with oil so I get truffle flavoured oil and it keeps longer.

All these products have very little truffle in them or don't even tell you what the ingredients is.

Ocado sell black truffle tortelloni which is gorgeous. If you get a truffle, stick thin slivers into a Camembert and bake it-it is heaven.

Truffle is a bit like saffron - a little goes a long way.

As you can see 10g of white truffle is £60

No wonder the locations where the truffles are found are secret!
Could I ask how you would describe the flavour of the truffle, what is the pungent smell similar to?
I wonder if they always use the piggies to collect them and how they stop them eating the truffles. For some reason this has always fascinated me.

Also, I wonder if the truffle collectors think chocolate truffles are an abomination.

Volcanism you can also use dogs, I saw someone training a dog to do this once at a dog show.

It's all about "umami" sensing, isn't it?
After sour, sweet, bitter snd salty, we pick up a flavour which many describe as "monosodium glutamate" and I personally recognise in:

Truffles
Ripe Camembert and mature cheese
Mushrooms, especially dried porcini
Marmite!

It's a sort of ripe mustiness which isn't to everybody's taste.

So, OP, if you want a cheap substitute a jar of Marmite won't break the bank. I make pasta with butter and Marmite (alla Nigella) when I'm cooking for myself. Tasty alright!

Thanks for all the info. The taste must be better than the smell, surely.
I suppose the dogs would be easier to train, I wouldn't be surprised if they sneak the odd one or maybe the dogs hate the taste.
What a cringe on the plane, did your friend just pretend it wasn't him Grin
Would like to see the truffle/diamond fair.

major I am already a marmite fiend and am obsessed with cheese. I'll eat a lot of goats cheese or a semi circle of castell while watching TV in the way others will eat a chocolate bar.

Something about the taste of truffles makes me think about them regularly throughout the day and really crave a hit of that savoury earthy off taste. I'm salivating on the train.

Ok so a trip to Elba is needed ?onger term and in the interim I'll head for F&M crisps and some of those lovely online places listed. DP is going to have to hide my xmas presents in a lead lined box buried in the garden or I'll know immediately where and what they are....

Sounds like they could be very addictive.
Thornton's used to do liqueur truffles, might get me a box, an abomination I'm sure, nevertheless very tasty. Shock

I've just looked up "umami" on Wikipaedia and it says we get our first taste of it in breastmilk which is almost as strong as broth!
Don't know what a shrink would make of us, OP! Grin
