Help me figure out quantities (and ideas?) for afternoon tea party!

OK so lots of relatives are going to be in the area around DS's birthday next week. They will be having a big breakfast elsewhere so we thought we'd do an afternoon tea type thing. But I can't figure out how much of each thing I might need! (Mortal fear of undercatering Grin).

Numbers at the moment stand at 20 adults and 6 children.

I'm thinking of doing:

Cakes:
DS is demanding a banana cake (it's his birthday I suppose!)
DH is demanding something chocolatey (rocky road maybe?)
Rhubarb, orange and almond
Sticky ginger
Victoria sponge
Flapjacks (my mum is making these)

Scones:
Plain with cream and jam
Cheese with cream cheese and pickle (savoury cream tea innit?)

Pastries:
Mini quiches
Feta and herb parcels
Scotch egg pie (maybe)

Sandwiches:

DS is insisting on smoked salmon and cream cheese! What other fillings? Egg? Cheese? Chicken?

Does that sound like enough? Too much?

I'll make one of each cake so that's OK, but how many scones? How many mini quiches? How many sandwiches? I have form for massively overcatering but leftover cake is no bad thing!

Also, what can I make ahead? Party is on Sunday and I'm baking all this myself!

Thanks! Smile

I shouldn't have to do mini quiches and cheese scones really but the DC are very partial to a cheese scone!

Does it all sound a bit heavy? No one does fruit or salad at an afternoon tea, right?

I'm talking to myself, aren't I?!

Sounds yummy! I would do one scone and mini quiche each (wouldn't bother with the savoury scones though, just do cheese and pickle sarnie's surely dc's will fill up on cake instead!)

Sandwich fillings I'd go
Coronation chicken
Egg mayo
Cheese and pickle
Ham and mustard/piccalilli

Make most cakes and sandwich fillings ahead of time, sandwiches made up just before and scones as late as possible too

Salad has no place in an afternoon tea, champagne does - and you sound like you'll deserve it! Good luck!

CORONATION CHICKEN! That's genius!

Thanks so much for the advice!

If there's plenty of options I'd guess half a round of sandwiches will be enough per person. Maybe do an extra few in case. I'd always do cheese (and onion), ham, egg, and possibly prawn or chicken.
The rest sounds good. I'd be happy with your options. Maybe a few crisps and bowls of cherry tomatoes or cherries/ strawberries for the kids.

Strawberries perfect, crisps good. Simple sandwiches for kids as well as fancier ones.

Looking forward to the baking but not the pre-party house blitz. Or the post party clear up!

Cucumber and anchovy butter sandwiches should always be part of a cream tea. 3 finger sandwiches each I think - so 3/4 of a round.
Cheese scones are yum - served with smoked trout and creamed horseradish as well as cheese and pickle. I don't think the pastries will be too much, especially as it sounds like people are having a big breakfast and then no lunch.
If you want fruit how about bit sized pavlova or fruit tartlets or even sponge flan with fruit. And of course fruit in Pimms (surely one of your 5 a day!)

Ooh I like finger sandwiches - plus I can never do triangles evenly. So that's - wait - argh - 70 odd sandwiches???

Argh that's just reminded me that DS asked for little meringues with cream and strawberries. You can get bitesize ones in a tub from Sainsburys I think (I can make meringue but that might push me over the edge!)

Silas some very posh ideas there! Thanks! Anchovy butter sounds yum.

Bubbly, Pimms and tea. Schloer or apple juice for kids. Job done?

Anyone know how far ahead I could make mini quiches and keep them in the fridge?
