I seem to remember I read somewhere that one of the best breakfasts you can have for giving long lasting energy is bagel with jam...

is this true? I love the cinnamon and raisin ones and would be delighted if this were true and it would keep me going all morning.

It seems a bit too refined to me - it would probably give you a sugar rush and than you'll be hungry again after half an hour. If the bagel was wholemeal it would be better and keep you going a bit longer, but jam is usually 90% sugar (sucrose and fructose) so not much good on the sustained energy front.

One of the best breakfasts to have is porridge, it's slow burning energy and keeps you going for longer, plus you can jazz it up and make it more nutritous by adding nuts or seeds or dried/fresh fruit. Or any wholegrain cereal really, just check the sugar content on the mass produced brands.

Can't really beat a banana and porridge for a healthy, filling breakfast.
Google 'glycaemic index' - things with a high (or is it low?) GI index release energy slower and keep you feeling full. Hoummous is one of the best, also sprinkling lemon juice on your food does something magic too.

Also sadly cutting out caffeine will stop the comedown you get an hour after a cup of coffee. I started buying decaf recently and Dh hasn't even noticed flavourwise but I feel much more steady iyswim, energywise.
