Where are all the nice peppers?

Why is it so bloody impossible to get a sweet-tasting pepper or tomato in this country? We just came back from Italy where peppers are 1 euro 39 a kilo. They may not look as pretty as the leathery and tasteless Dutch ones we are forced to endure in the UK, but they taste divine.

I can't imagine that Holland is an obvious pepper-growing country, so why do so many of the supermarkets rely on that horrible rubbish?

I cannot believe that everyone prefers pretty plastic-looking fruit and veg to stuff that actually tastes of what it's meant to taste of?

We get a veg and fruit box from Riverford, which is lovely, but just occasionally I need to buy other veg from the supermarket.

There were Italian peppers in the supermarkets in Naples last week, so I can only imagine that they are still in season there (it was 28c in the daytime in the first week in November), so can't believe that it is a supply problem either.

Opinions?

apparently thats what peopel want to buy. Dutch grow them specially for the english market didn't you know? In acres of greenhouses with roots in testtubes and computerised feeding and exposure to daylight. Its gobsmacking to see.

you can get good stuff but it is much more expensive so I for one grow my own.

I manage to get lovely sweet tomatoes most of the time but know what you mean about the peppers. If you are lucky enough to have a fruit and veg stall or market near you that might be better than the supermarket?
