Broth mix (barley, lentils split peas) i have one opened packet b/b 01/2014 and one unopened b/b 07/2013

Would you use any of them? Both look fine!

Yep. Best before means just that. May take a bit longer to get soft...

Yep. Just cook it longer as dried pulses get harder over time and beef more cooking to soften

They can beef more cooking but I meant need more cooking smile

Cook them separately and taste before you add to whatever you're cooking and taste as they might well have gone rancid and it would be revolting. I think due to the low cost I'd bin.

I'd have chucked them by now as way past their best. I'm fine with a few months for stuff like that, but no more.

I'd use it unless it smelled iffy - that stuff doesn't go off like meat, obviously, but I threw out a pack of pearl barley the other day cos it smelled really quite musty. Only a year out of date! grin

Not to hijack but I have a tub of mini meringues which are bb dec2014.
Would you eat or bin?

I would try one just to see if they are still crisp and haven't gone soggy and if they tasted ok I would use them - they are less than 1 month over the best before date.

On the meringues I would tear for soggy- if tasty and crisp is eat if not- bin
