Ok, so found out a couple of years ago that parmesan wasn't suitable for vegetarians blush

Recently plenty of recipes keep popping up demanding the stuff, what can I use instead? Please let it be something I can get easily at supermarket, not a specialist food shop thing!

We had to find this for Xmas. The tesco value italian hard cheese is vegetarian and ocado stock a ready grated Aldo Zilli equivalent.

It's on the shelves beside the regular Parmesan at our Waitrose. About the same sort of price IIRC.

mature cheddar tastes similar imo, so I would use that (don't know if cheddar is veg, though)

I think Sainsbury's do a veggie one in their Basics range. They certainly do a ready-grated one in a tube.

It is a source of constant frustration how many restaurants include parmesan in their vegetarian options and then give you stink eye if you point it out and ask for it to be excluded from your dish please.

Oh great, I can get my hands on it easily then, great, thanks all!

Yup, just look for "Hard Cheese" instead of "Parmesan".

I read a while back that the Sainsbury's basics hard cheese wasn't veggie any more but it may well have changed again - do check the label. I can strongly recommend Twineham Grange cheese: as a great parmesan alternative.

It's changed back, squatcher. The Vegetarian Society posted on Facebook a couple of months back. But still a good idea to always check the label.
