Dairy free dessert ideas needed!

Hello,

I'm doing the pudding course for myself and three friends in a couple of weeks time (at one of their houses) and one of them is dairy free. I'm not bad at baking and thought a dessert would be fine, but I'm realising that any desserts I can do all contain milk / cream / soft cheeses!
It needs to be something I can prepare in advance and take with me.
I also live in a small town with limited access to the more unusual of ingredients Smile

Given those restrictions, I'd be immensely grateful for any ideas please!

Fruit salad with ready made meringue?

Use dairy free chocolate in some form of chocolate pudding?

I recommend almond or hazelnut milk (in my small Sainsbury's) as a milk substitute.

Sorbets and posh biscuits?

Also, it depends if they are properly allergic - in which case I would stick with fruit salad only in case of cross contamination - or it's a lifestyle choice, in which case I wouldn't worry about biscuits etc.

Pears in red wine - peel the pears, put them in a pan with a 50:50 mix of red wine and orange juice, a cinnamon stick and maybe a star anise or some ground ginger (or a mulled wine sachet, if you have one of them) - simmer until the pears are soft, then take them out and leave them to cool whilst you add sugar to the poaching liquid and reduce it to a syrup. Cool the syrup, pour it over the pears, and chill.

You can serve it with whipped cream for those that aren't allergic, if that would be appropriate, or just serve it on its own.

Prosecco jelly with fruit set in?
A cakey thing with berries, or a brownie with berries? Super easy to get a dairy free recipe.

Or a chocolate mousse, made with eggs?

I'm Jewish and one of our dietary laws states that you cannot mix milk and meat. I therefore often find myself thinking up dairy free puds for when we have meat in our main meal. The word we use is 'parve'. Google it and you'll get a tonne of good recipes. Dark chocolate is you're friend! Smile

My friend is a baking blogger and also happens to be Jewish. Her blog is full of ideas including dairy free desserts...they will all be delicious as she is a fantastic baker and roadtests all her recipes. Just put dairy free in the search box

oooh thanks for all ideas. I like the idea of a dark chocolate mousse (made with eggs), and could serve with raspberries (and cream for the rest of us). Will also check out that Jewish cooking blog, thanks peppermum

Found a Delia Smith chocolate mousse recipe and tried it out today. Only consists of dark chocolate, egg yolks and then folded in egg whites so very easy! Was a bit on the heavy side but frankly, I'm just relieved to have found something to make Grin
