Yellow split peas- 2 questions

Wineorcider · 15/11/2014 11:15

I want to make a soup in my slow cooker which includes pre soaked yellow split peas.

According to the packet, I have to pre soak them for 8-12 hours, then rinse, boil for 10 mins and simmer for 30.

1: Where it states that a recipe requires pre soaked YSP, does this mean I still need to boil and simmer as above, as they are going to be cooked in the recipe anyway?

2: If yes to the 1st question, once I have followed the instructions as above, can they be frozen/stored to use as and when required to save time? (as in, the whole packet).

Your help is appreciated, MTIA Smile

i sometimes soak yellow split peas, but I have never pre cooked them....that's just for kidney beans and the like surely?

Dunno about the freezing

my soup recipe is
sweat celery and onions and carrots sometimes, put in slow cooker, add soaked or not YSP, add ham hock, plenty of fresh ground pepper, cover the lot with hot water from teh kettle and clamp on the lid and let it go for the day. Pick out the ham hock an hour or so before I am expecting to eat, strip off the meat, put that back, check the seasoning and lid back on until we're ready for soup.

Thanks catsmamma Smile

I was going off what it said on the packet. I've never used them before.

I had a vision of having to do all that every time I needed to use them, hence the freezing/storing idea.

I might just pre soak them then, and not boil or simmer. See how it goes.

Your recipe sounds lovely Smile
