Enough Chicken Pieces for your whole family - plus some for leftovers. Usually about 12 pieces for this amount of ingredients but fiddle to your heart's content. Chicken thighs and drums seem to work best.

Olive oil

3 - 4 tablespoons dark Soy Sauce

About 750ml Coca-cola

2 cloves of garlic - crushed

2cm fresh ginger - grated

2 Tablespoons Brown sugar

Salt

Fry the chicken pieces in the oil and soy sauce until browned. Turn down the heat and add the ginger and the garlic and cook for a few minutes - taking care not to burn the garlic.
Sprinkle over the brown sugar and allow to caramelise.
Pour over about half of the Coke and simmer until the Coke has reduced, adding more Coke until the chicken is cooked - usually about 30 - 45 minutes I suppose. Once the chicken is cooked let the sauce reduce down to a thick syrupy consistency and serve over rice.

Nigella's recipe!

Made it last night. Everyone loved it! The kids wanted seconds and thirds. So a clear hit in this household. So thanks for making me look it up!

Does it taste very sweet? I am intrigued by this recipe.

I did the one using BBQ sauce and it tasted just like a dish DH loves from the chinese. I used a spicy BBQ sauce, added a few peppers, onion and garlic. Next time he wants me to add some bean sprouts, water chestnuts and bamboo shoots to make it more authentic IYSWIM

Well I tried it and it is very sweet but very very nice. Deffo making it again. I did a google on it and apparently you can do the same thing with beer. Might try that next time but then what beer -lager or ale. As it is Japanese style dish probably should buy Japanese beer.

ooh is it the same amount of beer?

I'm just about to make some for the freezer...(very hungry freezer here).

Nikkie... did you take the chicken out after 30mins? Then you continue to cook the sauce down.

Sobernow.. I was a sceptic but it's gorgeous. It has a sticky bbq kinda taste. The family loved it! Never cooked it before but will definitely cook it again.

oh..... okay... let's go over it.

How much chicken did you use?

How much cola did you use?

Did you use a heavy bottomed pot?

Sorry... just trying to work out what went wrong. Honestly it's so lovely.

Not enough chicken honey. You need to put plenty in. You can freeze what you don't eat.

You will need at least 12 pieces for this recipe.

That's all it was. So, try again and freeze in family sized portions.

Or..... use 1/4 of the ingredients for the amount of chicken that you cooked this time.

You're welcome. To be honest when I made it with a huge amount of chicken the family loved it so much that there was nothing to put into the freezer or even keep for a late night snack lol

here

Have a look at the reviews at the bottom. One mentions using beer. You know I left the chicken in the whole time and it was lovely. I always use thigh which can probably take the long cooking better.

When you say pieces would you say one thigh or drumstick was a piece?

This has just reminded me that they told us about this recipe at slimming world - using diet coke obviously. Thanks! I was getting a bit bored of the meals we've been having.
