Can you roast a butternut squash whole?

I hate chopping the bastarding squash of the butternut.

I fancy it roasted for tonight though.

Can I roast it whole? How long would that take?

Or do I have to chop it a bit then oil and garlic salt and pepper?

I would cut it in half, take out the seeds and bung it in the oven (that gets done regularly at home) or if you're feeling strong, cut it in quarters Smile

Half you say. Any advances on halves?

I'm sure you can roast it whole, I remember coming across a roasting-it-whole recipe and being filled with joy that I didn't have to chop or peel the bastarding squash.

Can't find the exact recipe yet though.

You could try googling Grin.

Yes. I do. Put in the oven on a baking sheet and cook for around 90 minutes until the skin is blackened and it's squishy. I wouldn't cook one any other way.

Halves or quarters. Would take ages whole wouldn't it.

Waitrose do ready chopped...

I did just google, seeing as your name suggests a certain disinclination to do so, and yes, roast it whole. Takes about 90 mins, 200c.

I've done this, just jogged my own memory, really easy way to do it.

It does take a while whole but I'm far too lazy to chop one up. I normally do it the day or morning before before I need it and then shove it in a lasagna in the evening.

ok thanks. the reason i asked here is I'm sure I heard of it on here.

I am going to attempt to cut it in half, if this doesn't prove possible as I'm not a trained ninja assassin, then i will call waitrose and ask if they could send out a boy to chop my squash. Assuming that will fail, due to it being Morrison's fault, I will put my hacked at squash straight in the oven and see what 90 minutes of baking does to it.

Thanks. Smile

I took a hacksaw to mine. It was quite enjoyable.

i often roast them whole. Much easier to chop/peel etc afterwards. But let it cool down first unless you have asbestos hands.

Yep, I always roast them whole - agree with sleepless though, you have to factor time in for them to cool down again, because they hold the heat for ages and there's usually a few gushes of boiling steam too...

I often pop a squash, cut in half, in the oven while cooking something else in the oven.

Great for soup or my butternut squash 'pesto'.

I cut mine into big rings, once I reach the seed section I use a metal cookie cutter to remove the seeds/threads and set them on roasting tray like this. the skin falls off once roasted. Once they are cut into rings it's easy to quarter them too.
