ilovepowerhoop Mon 23-Dec-13 19:47:00

could you not make one yourself?

ginmakesitallok Mon 23-Dec-13 19:47:41

Scottish steak pie isn't any different from other steak pie????

ArtisanLentilWeaver Mon 23-Dec-13 19:48:01

Make your own. A big pot of stew with lots of carrots, turnip and onion and bought flaky pastry on top.
If not, you could try this butcher I think he does a postal delivery.

Seriously, we don't want me cooking anything! fgrin

Scottish steak pie is different to every other steak pie I have ever had, because it has sausages in it (beef sausages, I think). It sounds very odd, and I was a bit taken aback when I first encountered it, but it is delicious!

OP - it is not much use to you, but you can take your own ashet to the butcher in Kilmacolm, and he will fill it for you with his steak pie mix, and put a pastry lid on, so you can bake it at home and kid on it is home made.

They don't all have sausages in them. I prefer them without

ginmakesitallok Mon 23-Dec-13 20:31:41

I've been in Scotland for 20 years and yet to have a steak pie with a sausage in it....

Allinafankle Mon 23-Dec-13 20:38:20

Must admit the ones with sausages in give me the boak. grin

Have I been lied to? fshock

WildThong Mon 23-Dec-13 20:46:50

You can get both types. Personally I don't like stewed link sausage, horrible flaccid things, but most of my family do have it that way.

FannyFifer Mon 23-Dec-13 20:47:37

Fuck no to sausages in steak pie, that's just the weedjies.

Steak pie is dead easy to make.

WildThong Mon 23-Dec-13 20:52:39

My dsis in law from Fife swears by the sausage grin

FannyFifer Mon 23-Dec-13 21:05:26

I have never seen a steak pie with sausage in it anywhere local to me.
Why ruin a steak pie with sausage, tis just wrong. grin

WildThong Mon 23-Dec-13 21:08:48

Agree, can't stand them meself. Her local butcher also makes beef olives with pork fillet (which is actually delish)

Shesparkles Mon 23-Dec-13 21:24:32

The steak pie HAS to be cooked as a pie with the pastry on top, so you get the nice soggy bottom to it! None of the bit of stew with a piece of puff pastry on the side!

FannyFifer Mon 23-Dec-13 21:27:19

I've complained when I've ordered steak pie when out for tea and it's feckin stew with puff pastry, not fucking steak pie then is it!

FannyFifer Mon 23-Dec-13 21:29:02

Would it not be a pork olive instead of a beef one then, my butcher does beef olives & chicken olives, braw steak pies, mince rounds, ace haggis.

theeternalstudent Mon 23-Dec-13 21:29:45

We had steak pie for our tea tonight. No sausages, of course!
It was delicious, with loads of creamy mash and lashings of gravy.

sharond101 Mon 23-Dec-13 21:30:27

Steak pie is so easy that it's a crime to make. Good quality diced braising steak, chopped onions, chopped carrots and optional turnip. Brown in a large pot then add 2 tbsp plain flour. Add water to above the meat and veg mix bring to boil then simmer for a long, long, long time. Perfect results every time. Put in a serving bowl and put uncooked puff pastry lid ontop bake in hot oven until pastry is cooked through..

ginmakesitallok Mon 23-Dec-13 21:30:32

Hmmmmm beef olives..... haven't had them in ages, could be our new years eve dinner

stickysausages Mon 23-Dec-13 21:30:35

Aw gadz man... sausages in a steak pie!?

Like willies after a fortnight in a salty penis beaker... blurgh
