How much food do you throw away??

wangle99 · 25/06/2006 18:03

Came back earlier from shopping and from my fridge I have had to throw;

celery (used some of it)
2 fromage frais (out of date by a week)
a rather scrunched up dried out swede

This is rather a good week for me!

Please tell me I'm not alone

i'm ashamed at the food i throw away. i even find myself making up sandwiches i don't really want, just so i can get a bit of use out of the lettuce that's been unopened and the tomatoes that have waited patiently to be eaten. i regularly throw veg out plus almost full loaves that are smelling sour as they're past their best.

lots too, why does cucumber only last half as long as it used to

the other week i cooked some pasta just so that i could add the mushrooms and tomatoes that were nearly ready to be thrown away. neither of us ate the pasta, so it got thrown away a few days later too

same here though try not to

do have a food digester cone thingy in the garden that can chuck leftovers in so that makes me feel less bad about it...

I feel awful about throwing food away, but am learning what will and won't be eaten in time and try to shop accordingly. However, to my shame, I had to compost 2 globe artichokes last week because I put them in the cupboard and forgot about them and they came out smelling most peculiar

"do have a food digester cone thingy in the garden that can chuck leftovers in so that makes me feel less bad about it... "

Whats that then?

My council collects food waste separately - no idea what they do ith it (and don;t really want to think about it...)

I am so relieved I am not the only one!

We are getting a compost bin so the food will go in there soon.

Some weeks I'm better than others, some weeks I'm awful and have to throw loads away

I feel so bad about it but sometimes the meals for the week just don't work out how they are meant to!

too much

In the past few days I've binned some sausage pies, left over sausage filling, quater of a black forest cake, 4 seaseme seeded baps, 4 tortillas, 3 chapatis, 1 tepla, 2 pork pies, 2 large flat musrooms, an avocado, 1/3 salmon and brocoli quiche, 2 eclairs (vile), 1 egg, etc.

That's without leftovers.

Not much.
We like to eat.
Kelly, the birds who visit my garen would have eaten all of that.
You'd also be surprised at what dogs will eat.

I have chickens and two dogs.
there is practically nothing they don't eat, between them!

the chickens do seem to get quite a lot of bread - we are very sporadic in our bread eating.

moondog, I would put food out for the birds but I'm worried about two things - the droppings, and also the cats - there are so many hanging around and I thought the birds would prob get killed, or it will jsut entice the cats to come in even mroe than they do already.

We keep our bread and bread products in the freezer now, so we can get it out as we need it.

We throw away very very little away. I plan to make sure we use everything and plan for leftovers. I'll cook and freeze stuff if necessary.

I make soup with the remains of all the veg. Lettuces, tomatoes, bendy carrots, bendy parsnips . As long as you fry an onion. Or leek! Maybe add a bit of garlic and use a stock cube with the water. Then blend it all up.

I made 2 huge vats of soup last week, from veg that our village shop was giving away! One was mushroom and the other courgette and mint.

Had a bit of cream left over too, so bunged that in.

Honestly, take the lid off stuff like creme fraiche and smell it! If it’s been unopened, it still might be ok.

I cannot bear food waste! (Can you tell...?! )
