Can anyone tell me a good way of preparing fenchel? Bought some but I've never used it before.

I don't even know what fenchel is! I was tempted to sign up for one of those services that deilver in- season, organic veg. every week, but felt worried I would get ones I do not recognise. Is it like fennel?

Isn't it fennel ?

if you mean fennel it's great in risotto or just thinly sliced and eaten raw

hahaha omg what an idiot not even getting it right. Thanks

Yes it is here in the kitchen looking like I should know what to do with it but I don't

ZZZenagain Sat 25-May-13 18:01:29

really? You can eat it raw?

Fenchel is German for fennel.

I make a winter coleslaw with finely sliced (on a mandolin) fennel, red cabbage, and chopped apple.

Must have picked that up in Germany qlthough I never ate it there. Did have Fencheltee

This fennel red onion and chilli tarte tatin is one of DH's favourites.

that sounds nice Melanie. For some reason I thoughtcit had to be cooked

ZenOfPetals Sat 25-May-13 18:03:46

I cooked it thinly sliced, fried in butter (so much for in- season and organic healthy fare), mushed into mashed spuds.

Braised with chicken stock and, if you've got it, a dash of Pernod.

maybe I should get this more often, thanks for the tips

look up the bbc good food fennel and sausage pasta recipe - I made it last week after being given some fennel and it was really lovely and very easy to make. It says fennel seeds but I just chopped the fresh stuff and added and blitzed with a hand blender.

I slice then wrap it in a foil parcel with a knob of butter and bake it in the oven. Or bake with cheese and cream or cheese sauce.

ZZZenagain Sat 25-May-13 18:12:17

these are all good ideas.

ZZZenagain Sat 25-May-13 18:20:05

lifesagame I don't have chilli flakes but do have spicy sausages, I'll try that and see how it works out

Thanks everyone, good ideas to try out. A new veg, was getting tired of the same old ones

ZenOfPetals Sat 25-May-13 20:32:19

mmmmmm allalonenow that sounds yummy

ZZZenagain Sun 26-May-13 16:24:47

It does sound good, I am going to try that one too. OK following the advice on the thread, I cooked it today and it was quite good so I'll be buying fennel again! THanks everyone.

OMG cannot believe I wrote fenchel
