ideas for low fat snacks that will fool dh into thinking they are what he wants....

dh yesterday decided he was going on 6 week healthy binge and as I am going shopping today I said I would get really healthy stuff.

Prob is I know him and he likes to PICK when he gets in as we eat quite late (and NO we can't eat earlier!)

SO.....

I need some nice things for him to pick on. I said carrots this am, he said ahh yes get me some humous then - I said NO it's fattening and he instantly whinged

so any ideas? Low fat dips would be good but must be yummy

Asparagus
Baba ganoush
Pickles
Olives
Ryvitas
Cherry toms
Parma ham

Put any vegetables in a vinaigrette and the whole virtual low fat thing disappears.

Tell him how attrative (ie even more) he will be with a few less lbs.
My dh has just lost 2 stone with me taking this approach. He's gorgeous now!

Oh he has good intentions

I tell him to eat a banana at 5pm then that will stop him being so hungry when he gets in. I think it is force of habit more than anything tbh

What is dukkah?

I get DH Walkers Lites or Golden Wonder Lites - I knwo not particularly healthy but he is a huge crisp fan and at least he is having 1/2 the fat.

my dp likes celery and carrot with dip, he's happy to use low fat philedelphia mixed with some garlic.

Mixed beans salad? Nice with a little oil, herbs and mint.

CD, you can puree beans/lentils to thicken a dip. Just don't add the butter/oil/chees/other fat source.

Does he like spicy food? I like refried beans and salsa. I use celery in place of fatty totilla chip. Or toasted pita bread makes a good chip.

Onion soup mix (if you can find it -- may have to go to US) and fat free yogurt makes a good onion dip.

In sainsburys they have some crisp-type things, but they're called something pittas... you can get them in sour cream and chive or wholewheat. They're in big bags, in the crisps aisle and I think are less than 3% fat. I gave up the Friday night Kettle chip fest a few weeks ago and have found these to be a pretty good substitute-- around quarter of the calories. low fat guacamole is fab with them, but not necessary. Pretzel-type crisps are also good.

Get low GI stuff - rough oatcakes and lo-fat hummus is a "good" GI snack.

I find if you prepare/peel and slice any fruit and put it on a plate, its instantly more attractive.

I love biltong but don't think it is ultra healthy (re the original post for healthy snacks). It's pure red meat and from memory, has quite a high salt content.

well red meat if it is beef or game if it is ostrich or kudu

I think hummus in moderation is fine. It is a healthy food - you don't have to eat all low fat foods to lose weight, just eat fewer calories than you burn.

A couple of tablespoons of hummus and a plate full of crudites would be a great snack IMO. Eating small amounts of healthy fats such as olive oil helps your body feel satiated and stops you getting that low mood associated with dieting.

biltong - can indeed be a bit salty and is obv not as good as snacking on fruit/veg, but is actually very low fat/high protein if you buy the lean stuff (we get a low-salt beef one from Yorkshire, randomly).

Was just adding it to the ideas list because it was so successful for filling DH's peanut-butter-and-crisps niche - he finds eating protein snacks keep him full for longer than carbs, and describes it as a Manly Snack for Men, which makes me snigger.

oh yes, tis a very manly snack! wasn't meaning to have a go at your biltong loving snackster just wanted to point out the salt thing as many peeps don't even know what it is! (I love the biltong sticks that you can get mmmmmm)
