How do you do it? Have bashed it with a rolling pin loads and it is still shut. What now?

hit it really hard with a hammer - wrapped in a tea towel.
the coconut that is, not the hammer.
if that fails, fling it out the window Grin

We always 1) drill through 2 of the eyes to drain the milk
2) then cut it in half with a hacksaw.....

It's hard to get off the shell though isn't it. I like fresh coconut though - it's nothing like dried coconut which is like eating grated dried skin.

I second fob's method - wrap in tea towel, then put in plastic bag and fling it out of an upstairs window....it's the only way to go.Grin

Dh says look at the top of it, there will be 3 small brown spots, stick a nail in one of them and hit it with a hammer, this will let you access the milk to drain, then once that's all out, whack it to open! (I never knew this until now!)

When we used to get from a funfair, we would smash it against a kerb to open it. Lost all of the milk in it of course but did get to eat the rest of it on the way home.

oh no i bought a coconut yesterday so does this mean i will never see the milky innards of my hairy nut?Grin

Pierce all the holes and then bake it the oven. You still may need to throw it out of a first floor window to crack it open though.

Why did you buy it btw? (apart from giving us a larf)

I hadnt had one since i was a kid so i thought i would introduce my son to it as i used to love it when i was little. Was also cheap when i got it at the fruit market.

Hairy little bugger not sure how often i would get it (the coconut not my son).

Will go to bed defeated.

Have literally leaked a bit of wee laughing at this thread

foxinsocks · 17/05/2006 22:04

you need a hammer to bash the end with the three dents

then you can peel the hairy bit off to leave the white bit with a bit of skin

don't let the coconut win

Report
nooka · 17/05/2006 22:11

You need to make at least two holes as otherwise the milk won't drain.

I can pop the other holes. I feel like the coconut is going to win.

I might treat my kids to one seeing as they have never tasted a coconut. I might even let them loose on it with a hammer!
