Best kitchen knives?

We are just creating a gift list for our wedding at John Lewis. We would like to put a couple of good knives on there, but I'm not familiar with which are the best brands. John Lewis have Sabatier, Robert Welch and Global. Does anyone have experience with these?

I'd love to have Global, they last a lifetime but I can't afford them.Never heard about R.Welch.Sabatier-there are a few kind of Sabatiers, depends which one you want.

I can recommend Victorinox-not expensive and not rubbish either.

Global for durability, every professional kitchen I've worked in has them.

I have one Sebatier knife I've had for 30 years and is used most days.

I could only afford one at the time so bought a size that is ideal for chopping everything.

I also have a set of Jean Patrique - these wouldn't serve muster in a professional kitchen but I got a deal where you paid £10 delivery and got the knives 'free'.

I've had my two Sabatier knives 40 years - they have the right feel and balance for my hand and keep a lovely sharp edge. Then I have a small paring knife from Tesco that cost a fiver that's really good although it needs sharpening more often. I can't get on with Global because I think they are designed for a larger (man's) hand.

Sabatier; I have a complete set of them, some of the best money I have ever spent on kitchen tools.

You need to go and actually feel them as it is down to what you like. I like a heavy cook's knife - mine is a Henckels - I use it ALL the time and just bought my dad one for his birthday. I don't like Global knives as to me they are too light - as are Sabatier but it is down to what you want.
You also get knife blocks now that take any kind of knife so you can mix and match as you want.

Oh haggisaggis - great minds from a (presumably) fellow Scot Grin

Definitely Global. Love our set that we had as a wedding gift.
You can get them cheaper than John Lewis if you look for a deal. They usually have a stand at the Good Food Show if you're going to that and they do deals if you buy in the day.

The best are the karmin knives.

All knives go blunt eventually. Spend the money on a good sharpener.
