how much do 10 year olds eat?(17 Posts)
Please humour me. After dinner tonight, both DC (10) said they were so hungry they could eat another meal.
I couldn't help thinking through what they'd had that day and can't believe they meant it.
They'd just eaten: baked potato with butter and cheese, half a large tin of baked beans each, sweet corn, carrot sticks and cucumber.
Also that day, they'd had:
cheese toasties on wholemeal bread, glass of OJ and mug of steamed milk for breakfast
2 slices wholemeal bread and butter, a roast chicken thigh, apple juice, carrot sticks, yoghurt and crisps at lunch and two white chocolate cookies after school.
Gave them cereal and toast with peanut butter because they were so hungry.
How much do your DC eat?
Sounds about right. My son is 9 and some days he is like a human bin. He is still a lanky beanpole - just uses the energy for growing upwards not outward a! ( oh, not to mention his now size 5 feet !!)
Meant to say. - it'll be obvious if they are eating too much as they'll get chubby. Kids that age are growing so much they just need it!
I have a 10 year old.
Today, he ate 2 X weetabix with milk
1 wrap with egg mayo, cucumber, tomatoes (3)
Chicken breast, 1/2 a roast potato (wow), carrot, broccoli, stuffing, leeks (all reheated leftovers from yesterday)
He never eats after dinner & pud.
He's quite petite though, (4 stone 3lbs and 4ft 7)
my ds is 10
b'fast , homemade breakfast bar and juice
school dinner, chicken , potatoe, beans and fruit
after school 2 biscuits and a drink
dinner - beef stew, cabbage, green beans and bread
2 kiwis and a piece of cake and I saw him pilfer 2 more biscuits
My ten year old and eight year olds eat like horse, both are skinny as a rake, they must have hollow legs.
If my nearly nine year old niece is anything to go by - loads! And she's a skinny thing too! I was in shock/awe when she came to tea and devoured everything.put in front of her...am pretty sure she ate more than me
my dd ( 7) was off sick today (school called me yest morning to come get her and she has tonsilitos)
Breakfast - half a tin of heinz spaghetti and sausages and toast, which she devoured and then had other half and more toast.
An apple, bag of crisps and a cake as snack
Lunch - 2 whole chicken kievs and waffles with cucumber and tomatoes
Dinner - homemade spag bol, a huge bowl that i could easily eat and garlic bread.
She is very tall and very very skinny and doesnt stop eating ever!!
She has school dinners most days and moans about portion sizes, i always bring her a snack when collecting from school and dinner is always ready otherwise she moans and wants to snack, but because dinner is early she will later have a selection of cheese and crackers, fruit and some biscuits.
Dd is almost 10 but eats like a mouse tbh. Today she ate half a slice of toast and a few crunchy nut cornflakes, around six grapes for snack. Lunchtime one quarter of a ham lettuce and cucumber sandwich, one cherry tomato, one slice of apple, one bite of a shortbread biscuit. Dinner half a small jacket potato (left half of that) two spoons of baked beans, one bite of a chicken goujon. Offered a small fairy cake for dessert but wasn't hungry. She drinks water but will have hot milk before bed and will offer biscuit or toast (most likely refused) She's below 25th centile for both height and weight but has bags of energy so I don't worry tbh.
In the last year my ten year old has gone from eating like a small child to man size meals. Hes also started wanting supper before bed. (I can remember my brother disappearing with a slab of cheese and crackers etc) he's never been oanything other than a normal sized active kid. Not chubby or skinny just average.
I think he's getting ready for puberty and a growth spurt. (His older brother was early with puberty too)
Pudding would be normal for my 10 yrold after that main course and also supper. I can see his ribs and his bmi is normal so weight fine.
Have you checked portion size eg size of potato? I find rice pudding or fruit with custard fills them up.
I found at 10 my DS was always hungry, he did gain weight but then suddenly grew several inches taller. A growth spurt just like a baby.
The cold weather increases appetites, especially the ickle ones Sounds like they're well fed though, sometimes hunger is a sign of dehydration too? My boys are eating more than usual this month, must be the snow
My 11yo ds is constantly hungry and like a rake.
Sunday he ate:
Bowl of shreddies, 2 toast, banana for breakfast.
Lunch: Soup, sandwiches (4 rounds of bread, ham cheese) bowl of grapes with yoghurt and granola
Snack 4pm: 2 crumpets, apple
Dinner: Roast lamb, 5 roast pots green beans, apple pie, custard
And before bed he said he was hungry.....
And this is not unusual!
Yep! My ten year old has hollow legs as well. Always eating and has grown six inches in the last six months. He eats for England, gets a belly and then has a growth spurt. He is as tall as me at 4ft11in and wears size 6 shoes compared to my size 5.
In my experience, as much as male day labourers.
Ah, these replies have made me feel much better. My DC also get little pouchy bellies then suddenly spring up and stretch out again. Very cute. And have massive feet - like puppies not yet grown into their paws.
LOL at Kelly's 7 yr old managing to tuck all that away despite having tonsilitis! Sounds like one of my DC.
Monstermissy I wondered if it was a growth spurt. They were both suddenly RAVENOUS, not just a bit hungry. Could be cold weather too.
