I did lamb shanks with the River Cottage baked curry sauce and it was mega yummy. Proper melt off the bone.

Second that betty I popped a shoulder of pork in Friday night having first-rubbed it in salt, sugar and a bit of smoked paprika, added a sliced onion and some garlic cloves and left it on low fo 20 hours.

When I do meat (beef stew, pork and veg, anything like that) I always add gravy granules at the end to thicken the sauce up. I love lots of gravy so it works for me. Guess you could try cornflour but it might need a while to mix in?

Hi everyone when cooking a leg of lamb in my slow cooker do I need to turn it at all?? I browned it off, added garlic, onlon, carrots, a cup of red wine and a little stock (following a recipe I found) do I just leave it for 8 hours to do its thing now on low? :/

dita my beef stew (lobby round here!) was watery, I added pearl barley the next time and it was still too runny. When I mentioned it to a friend she said she always pulls a ladle full of fluid out towards the end of cooking and thickens it with bisto or similar before adding it back in. I've tried it and it works really well and adds a bit of extra flavour.

Jamnam - there are some slow cooker books by an English author called Kate Bishop that are good. And I love Australian Women's Weekly books - there are a couple of slow cooker books.

Thanks for link jam I'll try the lamb curry recipe next week

My cooker is having day off grin after the mac and cheese shrooming pasta mass it is still soaking.

We have seen the last of the macaroni off for lunch with salad and extra cheese on top. Phew.

I might be brave and try to cook a chicken or joint.

Love this thread. I got my slow cooker on Thursday - have cooked lamb curry and swapped the cream for coconut and ground almonds and it was divine. Now cooking Caribbean red bean stew for tonight's dinner 'cos I had some coconut milk leftover.

also got a frozen leg of lamb nit on bone, was thinking of doing this in slow cooker, defrosting it now. what would you pout in with it? and how long?

ditavonteesed Sat 05-Jan-13 08:00:36

for chicken I have thighs and breasts in te freezer, which would be better, the last chicken thing I made with thighs was so wrong but I left them whole, also is it ok to not not brown the chicken as I would like to perp ingredients at night so i can just chuck it all in.

I'm just balancing it on an onion sliced in half, threw in a couple of bay leaves and cloves(studded in the onions) and a tiny bit of water to cover the bottom.

TheSamling Sat 05-Jan-13 00:24:52

Fitness, do it overnight, it was ah-Mazing! next time I will wait til it's cooled before slicing, because it was soooo much nicer like that.

your stock...depends on what you are cooking it in. If it's coke then I think Nigella has a recipe for black bean soup. TBH the leftover liquid was pretty grim on ours though and I couldn't bring myself to use it!

Good feedback on the mac n cheese feeling, was slightly sceptical about that dish as it's soooo easy to make in 15 mins anyway.

Chilli was awesome, now have 4 stews and 4 chill is in the freezer too. Now....what to make tomorrow....

Feelingood Fri 04-Jan-13 23:51:23

The mac n cheese - lets just say it kept growing ang growing, by the time I'd finished adding water to prevent further burn it tasted very bland.

Ds ate and dd ate it

I've a big pot for tomorrow but have bought more cheese. I have put some in freezer.

We are all macaronnnooiieeeeeeeeed up.

TitHead Fri 04-Jan-13 21:49:03

I'm doing a ham in mine tomorrow. I want to make a soup with the juices from the ham. How do I do that never made a stock before.

Pinot Fri 04-Jan-13 18:30:18

good thread

Feelingood Fri 04-Jan-13 12:40:29

Hmmmm, I'm currently cooking the mac n cheese recipe from page one. I've had it on low and within an hour it was dried on brown round the edges and looked a bit curdled.

I've stirred it and put water in twice. I suspect that the 'bag of macaroni' was smaller than the 500g one I used or the other quantities must be wrong.

It smells nice I put some Dijon mustard in as well, looking forward to lunch.

On another note.....I can't help feeling smuggified, when meal time comes round and oh it's there ready! Especially if you've been out and come home. Even better when there is enough to freeze. grin

Contd thanks.

Feelingood Fri 04-Jan-13 00:09:42
