got my slow cooker, now what do I cook in it?

cant believe I have to wait until tommorow to use it. options are sausage casserole or lemon chicken. then on friday the otehr of these or ham and cherry coke. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

whole chicken comes out lovely and moist.
almost all the recipes I do are 8hours angry plus as I work- lamb lends wonderfully to extra long cooking- morrocan tagines, curries, hot pot (brown potatoes under grill when finished) and shank and leg keftico, or with red wine both take ten hours min and are deliciousgrin I love it

I did a breast of lamb stuffed with chipolata meat and apricots which was devine. just a splash of stock and leave for 8-10 hours- lovely on harisa cous cous

I have 3 slow cooker recipe books but only do a few recipes.

Posting mainly to get on the thread as your recipes sound nicer grin.

Joining thread for inspiration, great ideas.
Any suggestions for chicken thighs that wouldn't be too salty, so I can take off meat for 9mo ds? Maybe just brown skin, pop in pot with lemon and garlic. On high for 4 hours...would that work?

skiving - for jacket potatoes you need foil. Twist some into snakes, to make a platform for the spuds to stand on. You can buy crockpot inserts for this - it's to allow air to circulate under the food - but I've never seen any to fit my pot! Wrap each spud loosely in foil - this is to brown the skins; the hot metal does it. Cook on high.

Similar procedure for anything 'baked' - it's all about having a space under the food and a hot surface to brown the outsides smile

I'm currently munching my way through the best pork'n'beans I've ever made - go me! Main ingredients: pack of cannellini beans (soaked overnight); pack of Aldi's bratwurst + one of their smoked frankfurters, cut up; onions, garlic and veg. Yum!

If you put too much water in, add something dried to soak it up such as a handful of lentils.

I cook chickens on a few scrunched up foil balls, as stated earlier no added water required smile

I have recently been adding orzo pasta towards the end of the cooking time which soaks up loads of liquid and doesn't take very long to cook and is lovely!

Current fave in our house is curry. Chicken thighs, onions, tin coconut milk, tbsp curry pasta or to taste, tsp ginger, chicken stock cube small tin of chopped pineapple, handful of raisins. I do tend to heat some flour with the spices first and then slowly add coconut milk to make a nice thick sauce to pour over. You could just bung it all in but prob be a bit runny. Real hit with the kids, I guess because of the fruit.

Yep! From memory you pop the dumplings in about an hour before the end and switch it to high if cooking on a lower setting.

I've never done it but apparently porridge overnight ready or breakfast ....

I do do rice pudding in mine with lots of sultanas/raisins - fab

Themob- I do veg soup with bacon dumplings- just add dumplings about 45mins/hour before hand.
Am I the only one who hasn't had any luck with beef? I find it too stringy iykwim. is there a trick?

If you mean the meat is kind of fibrous, I know what you mean and am not sure what the answer is, other than cook it all on the hob and then shove it in on low. I have kind of got used to it.

Thanks for this, will be taking red cabbage out of slow cooker & putting chicken in in the morning grin My old crock pot diintegrated and Im a bit underwhelmed with its replacement. Recommendations for another new one much appreciated.

Rice pud is fab. All casseroles come out fab and i'm def going to try baked pots

whattodo how did you manage the steaming? Mine is part steamed but would be great to do the final steam on Christmas day in the slow cooker, save the hob.

Very inspired by this, will definitely be trying to do more with mine when back to work in New Year
