Is boeuf bourguignon 'posh' enough for a birthday dinner?

I have invited 8 girl friends over for dinner to celebrate my 40th birthday. I want to make something that can cook itself for hours while I get ready for the evening. Was thinking about boeuf bourguignon with dauphinoise potatoes and some naice veg. Is that too Sunday dinner stewy for a celebration? Too heavy? Can you suggest a nicer alternative?

I am child and husband free on the dinner party day so come as early as you like as long as you bring booze ( and a bday present natch) :)

Sounds delicious for November. Maybe not jam rolypoly for pudding though.

I have friends for dinner Saturday and will make something similar. You want to enjoy your time and be chained to the stove.
Sounds like a great menu to me.
