I keep seeing people on Mn talking about making smoothies to use up fruit. How do you do it? I have ripe bananas if that helps

I bung a random selection of fruit (things like berries rather than apples or oranges but usually including bananas as they give it some bulk) in the blender with a hefty splash of fruit juice (so it's not too thick) and maybe some yoghurt then blitz. Easy and delicious :)

I think it would be too lumpy without one but you can get them very cheaply - it doesn't need to be a powerful one for smoothies. Even one of the stick type would probably work.

Fruit, liquid. Ice/honey/mint/vanilla etc to taste. Blend.
I tend to use milk and yogurt for the liquid as i make them for DS and he needs the calories. (medical problems).
A stick blender is fine.

I freeze bananas (peeled, either whole or in chunks) and add frozen banana to other fruit, often frozen berries. Then some yoghurt. And blend with stick blender.

Frozen banana is lovely, it goes all creamy. Adding avocado to smoothies is good if you need to get calories in.

Also oats added in to mix is lovely. This might be called a 'thickie' I think.

I think when DH does it he uses fruit, ice, porridge oats and yoghurt and a blender.

I suppose you could use a food whisk thingy couldn't you ? < hopes someone agrees >

How about googling "smoothie recipes" ?

DC love a smoothie for their breakfast drink.
Our usual recipe is milk whizzed up with banana, sometimes with a handful of berries thrown in or a few drops of vanilla extract.
Few ice cubes too on hot days.

Spatch Have some bananas in freezer - can I ask how you peel them when frozen? Sounds silly but tried earlier and just succeeded in breaking the top off!

ATourchOfInsanity - Spatch here, I had NC'd.

I peel my bananas before freezing, as it is an arse to get the peel off otherwise. You can let the banana partially defrost and slop the skin off, but that's really messy and slightly defeats the object. Or you can cut the skin off, see linky for how-to:

I use yoghurt as the liquid and then add a variety of fruits.

When I am in a smoothie mood, I will buy lots of soft fruits from the market and chop them up. I put a mix of fruits into ziplock bags and put them in the freezer.

I don't use yoghurt in mine just orange juice, banana and frozen red/black berry mix. The frozen berries keep the smoothie cold when blending, banana adds thickness without need for yoghurt.

We use youghurt (usually plain, but fruit is fine - just more expensive and not necessary as the fruit will add the flavour on it's own) - about 1/2 a big tub
a couple of bananas
1/2 a tin of drained peaches or drained mango, or any fresh or frozen soft fruit.
Wizz it in the mixer.
Serves 4 - 6 portions depending on how greedy you are Wink

Gorgeous, and a great way to persuade those not keen on fruit to consume some.

'Hard' fruits - like apples - don't really work, and nor do citrus fruits.
Any berries, or 'softer' fruits like nectarines, peaches, mangoes are lovely.

If only got bananas and yoghurt, then can throw in a bit of fruit juice for more flavour.
