Need some inspiration! I love spicy food and would love to be able to make some decent curries from scratch, but hate those recipies full of things I have never heard of with about 40 ingredients in! TY in advance Smile

Madhur Jaffery's curry books are brilliant but if you want a vegetarian cook book tat includes some curry recipes you can't go wrong with Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's veg book. It is one of the few books I own where I've made half the recipes and keep making them again and again.

I recently got one by Mary McCartney, everything I've tried so far has been really good

Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian is gorgeous but it might come into your 'full of things I haven't heard of' worry!

If you've been a veggie for a while and like cooking, I personally wouldn't rec the Hugh FW one as there are lots of recipes for cheese on toast, egg sandwiches etc.

The World Food Cafe books (sold in Oxfam) are excellent for spicy recipes from a range of countries.

I won't recommend Hugh FW one for veggies either. Like Remus I found it too full of cheese on toast. The food is also very very bland. (You said you like curry and spice). Basically feel like a veg book for meat eaters, where the veg is more of a side.

I'd suggest a Madhur Jaffery too. And I'm not sure what are things you haven't heard of. That depends on your background isn't it! You might be very familiar with Asian spices which would then make a book like Easy Curry (by Madhur Jaffery) not full of unknown ingredients.

Oh I have cooked about 5-6 things from Hugh FW book. All of them were so bland my DH banned me from cooking from it now. I was being stubborn with it. I'd have resold the book if it's not so raved about here.

I really like Ottolenghi's Plenty (it's a veggie book), but I think it'll be in the category of you-need-a-well-stock-kitchen.

I love freebies. Even if the food is rubbish, there's nothing to lose isn't it? Thanks for the link!

This is one of my most used cookbooks and costs less than five pounds. The vegetarian student cookbook

Has been a long time since I've been a student and my latest buy was Hugh FW's book, but I still love this one. Thai and Indian curries and lots of other good stuff.

I was veggie for years and by far the best recipe book i had was the Good Housekeeping one:
www.amazon.co.uk/Good-Housekeeping-Step-Vegetarian-Cookbook/dp/0091851645?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21
Everything I have cooked from there has been great. Quite why it is costing £75 on Amazon right now though is anyones guess Confused Please don't spend £75 on it - no cookbook is that good!

Meat free Monday is fab, as is food for friends.

The latter is a mix of simple and more complicated recipes though.

No need to buy a book. Please log onto Titlis Busy Kitchen. She is highly entertaining, and she clearly demonstrates how to prepare all sorts of veggie and non veggie food, with a lot of indian/asian dishes. Let me know what you think.
