Got my Sainsbury's delivery last night, DH was putting groceries away and came in to ask if bananas were the new world currency or something...

I wanted to order 6 bananas and ordered 6 PACKS of 5 instead! Shock

The Sainsbury's shopper was actually really considered and chose varying degrees of ripeness, but I still don't know what we're going to do with 30 bananas.

So far, I thought of making a couple of Banana Bread Loaves and Milkshake for freezing - give me some other ideas, pretty please!

Banana and peanut butter muffins are fab and even better with the addition of chocolate chips and freeze well.

Having a rummage on the BBC site, there's also a Baileys and banana trifle and a microwave banana pudding which look good.

You can definitely freeze bananas though, so you don't have to eat them all at once.

At least you didn't do what I did, forgot to update my order from Tesco and had my original order of 8 bananas delivered, delivery charge was 5 times the price of the bananas, and the delivery driver smiled!!!

You can freeze peeled bananas. Savvy Australians raced out to the supermarket when there was flooding in Queensland and panic bought bananas to freeze. They went from $2 a kg to $20.

I digress.

Nigella makes a fine smoothie with frozen banana, peanut butter, milk and coffee powder.

DH is being a spoilsport and refusing me a monkey. Angry

multipoodles the guy must've been thinking you were really keen on your bananas!

Thanks, some really brilliant suggestions (yes, even the curry and I'll try anything once) and I didn't actually know you could freeze bananas so that's the immediate problem solved.

Savoy funnily enough I was living in Sydney at the time and remember that well, but we just went without for 2 seasons!

Sainsburys will take them back- no bother. Just go in store with your receipt or print out of order. Driver can take anything back you don't want also, for future reference. Shame, monkey would have been fun for a while.

I'm still looking for THE perfect banana bread (cafe style) recipe. Tried the Starbucks one but it was far too sweet - anyone have a foolproof one?

I will eat some oven-fresh muffin-style ones in a little while, and report back Poppy - just for you, obviously Grin It's an easy recipe with flour, sugar, eggs, butter, yoghurt and baking powder. Only other thing is walnuts, but I add sultanas instead for DC. And bananas - obviously!

Banana pancakes are lovely hot, and are also good eaten cold with butter like scotch pancakes:
150g plain flour
Tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp bicarb
2 mashed bananas
Tsp sugar
Tsp melted butter
250g natural yoghurt/buttermilk
Handful sultanas
1 egg

Mix well, fry in splodges in a dry frying pan (don't use oil). My favourite thing for breakfast at the moment. Probably freezable but mine never survive long enough to find out!

Banana Loaf ? Best Ever uses one whole pound of bananas and freezes well so make two, slice them up and freeze in sarnie bags ready to pull out for packed lunches?

4oz butter
4 oz brown sugar (use any color)
1 egg
1Ilb banana
3 tbsp yogurt, any flavor or plain or crème fraise
1 tsp vanilla ess
8 oz plain flour
1 tsp bicarb
1 tsp cinnamon
4 oz raisins

Gas 4 oven with shelf in middle
Grease and line a 7x11 loaf tin

Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat together ? or put in food processor and push button. Then add egg and beat till smooth. Add banana?s if doing by hand mash first, if in and push processor then just chop them into the bowl button. Add yogurt and vanilla essence.

Sift in the flour, bicarb, cinnamon and push button or stir.

Finally add the raisins (don?t push button as the raisins will disappear!!) just mix in with a spoon and then pour the mixture into the bread /loaf tin and level off with a shake and put in the oven for one hour and twenty mins ? check a cocktail stick comes out clean and it is cooked.

Turn out and let it cool. Then cut into slices and put each slice in a freezer bag ? pop in the freezer and use when required Ideal for pack ? ups as the slice of loaf will have defrosted by lunch time.

Try using dried blueberries or cranberries instead or aswell as the sultanas. This cake does keep well in a tin and will mature with age ? if ever allowed.

I made it this week and didn't have yogurt or creme fraich so put in a couple of tablespoons of milk and it was still lovely and lasted all of three days.

This is more loaf than cake, it is moist and not lights or dry

This is our family recipe - not too sweet and tastes fab with a thick layer of salted butter on it.

Banana bread

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
4 to 6 over ripe bananas
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt

1.beat butter and sugar until creamy then add vanilla

  1. add beaten eggs little at a time beating well after each addition
  2. Sieve the dry ingredients and add to the wet mix
  3. mash the bananas well and add
  4. mix well and pour into a greased lined medium sized loaf tine
  5. Bake for 1 hour at 180C / 350F.
  6. serve sliced with butter

Tastes much better ( flavours develop) after a day or so in an airtight container but it never lasts that long in this house!

I think we must eat too many bananas because I read that and thought '30 bananas, varying degrees of ripeness, what's the problem?'. That's normal consumption levels for us, with no banana bread/milkshake/lollies/curry Confused

HAGB we get through around 15 bananas per week between 3 of us, the fourth sometimes will have a banana.

I rarely have ripe enough bananas to make the above loaf Sad as it is lovely

love the ideas but surely the sainsbury man should have agreed to take back some of the bananas - easy enough for them to deduct if they are pre-packed and priced individually. I am speaking from experience - my tesco delivery man kindly offered to take back the 14 extra brocolli I had ordered by mistake once and i was refunded!

Right... it's raining here in Scotland (shocker), we're all cosy inside while DD naps and I have enough ripe bananas now so I'm going to try both recipes from Blueberryboy and Ivykate. Thanks guys!

Must defend Sainsbo's honour by explaining that the dude was long gone when DH unpacked stuff and discovered the banana boon! Grin
