Please tell me there is such a cooker

Is there a 50mm wide gas cooker that is actually worth having?

We inherited the one we have in our kitchen now when we bought the house and I suspect it is at least 20 years old. As a result the walls of it are not very thick so it actually has a pretty decent amount of space inside it so I can cook using fairly wide trays etc. Unfortunately it is way past needing replacing, the seals have gone and we are probably heating way more of the kitchen (or maybe even the living room too) than we need to.

All the 50mm wide cookers I have seen so far appear to be designed to cook little more than a ready meal. The walls are now so thick because of improved insulation it leaves little space inside. We really can't afford to redo the whole kitchen right now so any new cooker needs to fit in the existing gap.

Am I kidding myself in hoping that I will be able to get a cooker that narrow for someone who likes cooking as much as I do?

Blush oh pants. Obviously I mean 500mm!!! My kitchen isn't that small but apparantly my brain is.

Grin Indeed Bilbo. I'd like to say I hadn't proof read my post before I hit send but I had. I blame it on the Moshi monster socks that DD was waving under my nose to have the tags cut off.

Right. I'm afraid I can't actually answer your question because I don't have the right type of oven.

But Comet have loads of 50-cm gas cookers on their website (44 of them!) - can you get to a showroom and have a good nose in them all?

Thank you for coming back. I am actually considering going along with a bag full of my most used baking trays/dishes to see which they fit in. Grin I could be 'that' woman.

barmy - I drove to a showroom an hour and a half away from me with a bag full of trays to check what fitted the cooker I had sourced. Lady in showroom obviously thought I was a nutter but was very polite to my face Grin

Good luck.

One thing occurred to me - if they won't go in the usual way round, will they fit sideways (front to back)?

arfur - I am very pleased to hear that. If I do it I can be safe in the knowledge I am not the only one. Grin

Maybe Bilbo but if it's anything like my current oven it would just end up with the things at the back of the tray burning.

I shall keep hoping for that windfall which would enable me to re-do the kitchen or better still move to a bigger house with a humungous kitchen.

The kitchen in this house would do nicely
