A new Lidl has opened fairly near me and I wondered if it's worth a visit and if so what should I be buying? TIA

Wraps. A pack is 67p, in the co-op it's more like £1.40ish.The veg isn't great, but there's plenty of other stuff that is. Definately pay it a visit, especially if you're trying to cut down on the shopping bills.

The fruit & veg in ours is fine as is the bakery. At Xmas they did Coquilles St Jacques (scallops in half shell with creamy sauce thing) that was bloody lovely.

I really like their chocolate (really good quality high cocoa dark chocolate), bread flour is cheap, as are organic eggs. DP really loves their continental pilsner lagers in a bottle. Also you can get nice sliced bread cheap, e.g. a multiseeded loaf for 89p whereas at other supermarkets they would cost £1.30 +. Goats cheese is nice, as is their bags of grated parmesan, really fresh and good quality.

I personally think their fruit and veg are good and really good value. Often there are offers on, e.g. got a big punnet of blueberries, can't remember how much, but less than a pound and would usually cost at least 2 elsewhere. Avocados are always ripe.

I secretly love the quattro formaggio pizzas in the chiller, really thick and doughy and cheesy so totally not what pizzas are supposed to be like but really good hangover food! Also like the breaded camembert/mozzarella in the freezer section. Frozen pizzas are good too (their own brand).

Nappies are good and very cheap, but still think asda are better, but their wipes are the best cheap ones out there. Really thick and good quality like huggies, but about 89p.

Their cheapest pasta also has a really good bite and tastes a lot more expensive than it is (dp is very particular about pasta and can tell cheap stuff a mile off but he will eat this).

You've just reminded me how good lidl is! Have been getting Sainsburys online for convenience but reckon I may pay Lidl a visit soon!

Oh and their fake magnums/soleros are really nice and dirt cheap.

Our Lidl has very good fruit and veg - strawberries in particular were generally better than in Waitrose! Also:

  • bio or non bio Washing liquid - Good Housekeeping Approved and no difference to Ariel/Persil etc IMHO
  • Dulano Baked Ham (really, really tasty and lovely....and £1.99, much, much nicer than other hams twice the price) - its large flat pack
  • Dulano Beech Smoked Salami - yum
  • Smoked salmon
  • Vac packed Mussels in White wine sauce
  • Cremee soft cream cheese with garlic (to go with smoked salmon and their bagels!)
  • Eggs, Flour, Sugar, Pasta
  • Cat food (my v fussy mog loves it)
  • Smoked/unsmoked Bacon
  • Smoked mackeral
  • Wraps
  • Their cleaning products (W5 or something?) - cleaning fluid, cream cleanser, bleach, etc)
  • Shower gel and hand soap (you can buy the brand in supermarkets in France and Spain...nice smell, does the job perfectly but is super cheap!)

Things not so great -
  • Their Chardonnay, cumberland Sausages (felt mostly non-meat!), fresh garlic bread (just had it....weirdly no garlic, hardly any butter and the bread wasnt that good either).

LOVE Lidl!!!!

I have noticed that the fruit and veg and dairy/eggs at ours seems to be quite local, which is excellent and not what you'd expect for prices, although we are in SW so maybe they buy all their stuff from down here anyway...

Ime lidl's own brands are not necessarily cheaper than "value" brands, probably about the same. But the quality is sooo much better.

Red peppers stuffed with cheese and marinated in oil. Lovely. Can only get them during 'greek weeks' here in France, which makes me very sad.

Think it depends where your Lidl is on what they stock and the quality of the fruit and veg. Ours has a great fruit and veg section but the one near my Mum & Dads is dire.

DD would highly recommend the milk chocolate with whole hazelnuts and the Mr Choc fake peanut M&Ms for only 99p.

Since I've started shopping at Lidl I've easily saved myself around £100-£200 a month.

Nectarines £1.50 a punnet atm (about 8 fruits!) which disappear down DD with frightening speed.
Pesto
Jams are excellent
Milk £1 for 4pts
Love the Chaumet (sparkling perry, 75cl) which is now back much to our delight - £1.29!! Gorgeous
Icecream - red tub about £3.50 Bourbon vanilla I think - really really good, so creamy and vanilla-y
Nappies & wipes
DH likes the cream sherry
Salamis - massive big ones for about £3/4 that last for ages - the smoked one is the best
Smoked trout
Smoked mackerel
Sugar is only 86p for the 1kg bags
Flours all v good value
Fruit juices very good
Not sure if it's current stock but they do a fake Pimms called Jeeves for about £6 and I can't tell the difference
Wines have all been pretty good
Tomatoes usually good - esp the baby plum ones for £1

I love them.

Our local Health Food Shop buys their organic tomatoes from Lidl and sells them on for an extra £1 per punnet. Always makes me Smile.
