Didn't Jamie Oliver report something similar from a town he visited on his trip round Italy? Hardly surprising really that the Italians don't want McD's when they have such lovely food available.

What alternatives would we have in UK?
Fish and Chips?
Greasy Spoon?

I would prefer the real Italian panninis, however I feel there is little chance of this happening and suceeding in my small provincial town.

Agree Gingerbear. Although when I first worked in London (89-93) there were such great little sandwich bars near work, mainly run by Italians, i would never have dreamt of setting foot in McD's.

Next to fold IMO should be Starbucks. Their attempts at world domination are becoming as sick-making as McD's as individual little coffee bars find it more difficult to compete with the branding.

We don't have a McDs where I live for over 30km so I can't go anyway and actually I have to drive for 20 mins for a burger. I only have to drive for 2 for a panini or a pizza.

For those of you who do live in the UK I think the only way to prevent McD, supermarkets and Starbarks taking over is by chosing to shop locally with small businesses and by suporting the local shops. Where I live IKEA is trying to open a branch and all the local business and the CHURCH are doing everything in their power to stop it and looking like they might succeed. When I say the church I don't mean the local church but the regional organisation. Further because I live in a strongly Catholic country which until 100 years ago my part way a owed by the Vatican I think it is very likely IKEA will not open, it has certainly been delayed.

Though Ikea food is really tasty and cheap too. And they do proper kids sized portions and stuff kids like.

starbucks is selective depending on country.

i pay £1.45 for a 'tall' one in the UK one. that's a bit pricey.

i pay $1.50 in canada. That's half the price! the canadian one is a good price considering it would cost you only a little less to get a worse coffee around the corner at one of their many many doughnut shops.
