can any American MNetters enlighten me - what exactly is 'cake batter'?

I am an avid pinterest user and keep seeing fab looking recipes which mention the use of cake batter. They all seem to mean some sort of cake mix, I think, but pictures suggest multicoloured-ness too. I am so confused. I have googled it, but to no avail!

Oh, and what's the difference between white and yellow cake? apart from the obvious one...

thanks :o

Cake batter is just what you call the cake mixture before it's cooked, as far as I know.

thanks, I just wanted to check - it looked like it may be a special type of cake mix from some of the recipes I've seen. I will just have to experiment :o
