Canned or fresh?

You called?

Lol! Fresh ones.

Do you know how to gut them? The easiest thing to do is gut them, wash them, sprinkle with some salt and grill.

Are you after something more involved, or are you looking at them nervously?

They're already gutted. I brought them because they were a bargain but I've never cooked them before. So is it best to just keep them simple and cook them with nothing else on? What should I serve with them? They're for the dc's btw. I didn't think to buy enough for me hmm

Sardines are cheap you are right and they are delicious. They can be a bit on teh bony side for some but if you're careful you can avoid the bones quite easily when you eat them. If you get to be a dab hand with them you can think about filleting but that's a bit more tricky!

I found a couple of recipes on the BBC earlier which look quite simple:

grilled sardines with potato and tomato salad

this would be really nice

In both of those they take the bones out though. The easiest way is just to sprinkle with a bit of sea salt (if you have it, normal salt if not!) and whack under the grill for a few mins. You can see when they're cooked - the flesh changes colour. Then have them with salad or whatever you like.

here is a recipe for thai style grilled sardines. It is good in that it tells you how to grill the fish whole rather than poncing about with them like in the 2 BBC ones.

Sorry just saw for DCs so the bones may be a prob? You might have to help them a bit! Also I'm prob too late - just saw your post when I got back from nursery.

The Thai style ones look lovely! I will try those another day! I just seasoned, oiled and lemoned in the end. Dc's were a bit unsure but they ate it and they would have it again I think. I just served with rice and broccoli stirfried with garlic and chilli- which they did find too spicy and wouldn't eat!

Sounds delicious! So glad they were enjoyed.

Sardines are super-fantastic value and so yummy and good for you....

Let's not spread the word too far eh?
