Baby cereals

I have searched everywhere for baby cereals that aren?t full of extras like apple, cinnamon, vanilla etc. Where can I find plain baby oats or other cereals just on their own?
Alternatively, do I even need to buy baby cereals? Can you just mill or grind normal oats fine enough so that they are suitable for younger babies and then use as normal?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

how young are we talking?

there is a plain porridge from aptamil

tbh from 8 months or so i used oatabix and the like

i cant see why you cant use normal oats though

baby cereals are very expenisive imho and ds hated them!

If 6 months + you can give normal porridge (not jumbo oats).

Plum do a 4 grain porridge without any vanilla, apple, etc which tasted ok too .

as an aside, many people told me to use weetabix, but oatabix has less salt

I have used Flahavans Irish Porridge Oats since DD was 6 months, and she's been fine. It has no other ingredients except the oats.

Thank you. Lots of great advice. I think I'll go for normal porridge.

Slainte do you cook it up as you would porridge for yourself then, with milk? And can you ge flahavans in UK (I'm Irish too)

storminabuttercupI totally agree about the expense of baby cereals - it seems like a bit of a baby food manufacturing scam to me.

we used ready brek and weetabix. If your lo is over 6 months you can use full fat cows milk with cereal.

littleyellowchicken yes I buy mine in Waitrose (bought it as it was one I recognised!). Cook as you would for yourself, for my 8 month old I cook 2tbsp porridge with 6tbsp full fat cows milk and usually add fruit when it's cooked, though she has it without too. HTH Smile

cereal is the only baby-specific food i do buy. cow and gate do a baby weetabix type thing, but with no salt/sugar.
our family foods tend towards the salty - no added salt,, but lots of bread, cheese, stocks, so i prefer to give the baby salt-free cereal.
