Tuna bake recipe

I made a tuna bake this weekend using (loosely) a Sainsbury's recipe card. It involved cooking the pasta, making a sauce with onions, mushrooms and tinned tomatoes (and spinach, but I used peas instead), and then baking briefly to melt mozzarella on top. So multiple pans, a reasonable amount of prep, and it didn't really taste that nice.

Has anyone got a moderately healthy and tasty tuna bake recipe? (Preferably not a cheese sauce version.)

IMO you can't beat the schwarz packet tuna pasta mix. Just add tuna, tomato puree & cooked pasta. 2 pans, not a lot of prep, lovely result.

Use a can of Bachelors Condensed Soup for your sauce - either chicken, mushroom or celery. Add to cooked macaroni and stir in the tuna.

There are loads of recipes on American website, The brand-name of the soup there is Campbells.

I don't like it that much but DH loves it. His mom served up tuna bake and ground beef casserole every week.

Yes strangely I am not nostalgic for some of my mums mince dishes or her very earnest Nut loaf recipes

A jar of Homepride Tuna Pasta bake mix.

Add pasta (uncooked) add can of tuna. Chuck in oven for 25 minutes. Grate cheese on top, chuck in for another 20 minutes.

Piece of cake.

Thinking about it, I've never had any success with a tomato-based tuna sauce for pasta. I tried making spag bol once with tuna instead of mince, and it was similarly unappealing. It just doesn't seem to cohere.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

the key to a good tomato sauce or soup is celery, no idea what it does, but it just makes a MASSIVE difference.....but you didn't hear it from me runs before she's shot

I have to say, I love love love the recipe for Jools' Saturday Pasta in the Cook with Jamie book, which is a tomato-based tuna sauce. There aren't many Jamie Oliver recipes I like but this one's a winner and all cupboard staples. I think what sets it apart is the chili, cinnamon, basil and lemon juice/zest which really lifts the whole thing.

It's all over the internet so I don't feel bad reproducing it here from the JO website - I bet it would be great with a bit of extra sauce and then baked in a tray.

olive oil
1 red onion, peeled and finely chopped
1 - 2 fresh red chillies, deseeded and finely chopped
1 level teaspoon ground cinnamon
a bunch of fresh basil, leaves picked, stalks chopped
2 x 400g tins good-quality plum tomatoes
2 x 300g jars good-quality tuna in olive oil, drained and flaked
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
500g /1 lb 2oz good-quality rigatoni or penne
zest and juice of 1 - 2 lemons
a small handful of freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Heat a splash of olive oil in a heavy-bottomed pan and cook the onion, chilli, cinnamon and basil stalks on a medium to low heat for 5 minutes until the onion has softened and is slightly sweet. Turn up the heat and add your tomatoes, tuna and a good pinch of salt. Break the tomatoes up using the back of a spoon, then bring to the boil and simmer for about 20 minutes. Taste for seasoning.

Meanwhile, cook the rigatoni in a pan of salted boiling water according to the packet instructions. When al dente, drain the pasta in a colander, reserving some of the cooking water. Toss the pasta into the tuna and tomato sauce with the roughIy torn basil leaves, a glug of olive oil, the lemon zest and juice and Parmesan and mix together weIl. Loosen the pasta with a little of the reserved cooking water if needed. Check the seasoning and serve immediately.

Cooked drained pasta, can of tuna, can of sweetcorn all thrown in a big oven dish. Then add in a plain white sauce with 1 or 2tbs of tomato paste (light pink in color is plan), mix and cover in breadcrumbs and granted cheese mix.

throw it in the oven for 20-30 mins till bubbling and yummy. Grin
