Chocolate for breakfast?

My daughter won a box of Chocolate Weetabix at a roadshow they are running to promote their cereal. Do I let her have it and let it be a slippery slope for not going back to the plainer cereals? What are mums thoughts on what cereal to give their children in the morning?

I avoid chocolate cereals and tell my kids chocolate is not fir breakfast times. But in your position as it is something she has won. I would let her have it and remind her that it's something you will never be buying. It will only be a slippery slow if you let it be.
Good luck Smile

Mine get a few spoonfulls of that kind of thing on top of the healthier sort of cereal; also a binge (if they want) for birthday or Xmas.

Maybe keep it for weekends as a treat?

Why not let her have it as a weekend breakfast?

Mine have something they have chosen themselves on the weekends and porridge or similar on weekdays.

I would keep it for treats, but I am a mean mummy!

FWIW, my friend always has at least 6 choices of cereal on offer - her DD chooses the sugary / chocolately ones and her DS chooses weetabix. So I'm not sure it necessarily is a slippery slope!

Keep it for pudding.

Some good ideas, thank you. I suppose it is still Weetabix
so not as bad as some others out there. I think I'll try the weekend breakfast or for pudding! I did kick myself for letting her have a go on the big cereal bowl ball pit but they made it look so much fun... it did it's job of attracting children! Perhaps that's another topic to discuss!

At least she didn't win a box of the cereal with the marshmallows in it Grin

My DD is a Weetabix girl and she asked for a box of the chocolate chip.
She hated it!
DH won't eat chocolate, DS won't touch it (too new and fangled for him).
Not my cup of tea either, so binned.

chocolate weetabix has less sugar in than:

cheerios (and own brand equivalent)
shreddies (and own brand equivalent)
no-added sugar alpen

the only cereals afaik with less sugar are:

plain shredded wheat (ugh)
ready brek
plain weetabix
cornflakes
rice krispies
raisin wheats

I am a nutritional info nerd when it comes to cereals as I refuse to allow my children to kick off their day by filling their faces with sugar. However, they are allowed chocolate weetabix as it's only 15.9g of sugar per 100g, and they don't follow it with a chaser of nutella or jam on toast. I'd let your DD have it.

Choc Weetabix is a huge hit in my house. (not me, can't bear the stuff!) its quite expensive though.

Mine get one of those multipack of mini boxes of crap cereal at Xmas and on holiday. They realise this is a treat and have no issues with going back to normal plain cereal at home.

Shock at the choc weetabix info above!!

Really surprised at nutritional info, just the word chocolate in the title makes you assume it is loaded with sugar... you're right! Chocolate Weetabix has 7.2g of sugar per serving whilst Shreddies (something my DD eats all the time for breakfast) has 11.9g. Who would've thought! However my DD tired it at weekend but didn't like it!! I'll have it instead though but will go back to plain Weetabix when all eaten! Shredded Wheat with warm milk is yummy BTW!
