Cupboard:
potatoes
onions
squash/pumpkins
sweet potatoes

Everything else in the fridge.
That's just me though, my mum keeps carrots/cauliflower/cabbage/broccoli and such in the cupboard.

Potatoes in the cupboard, everything else in the fridge. My mum also keeps everything in the cupboard. I just think they all last a little bit longer in the fridge.

carrots from saturday market, stored in the fridge, were softish by Wed. surely that it not right? do you cupboarders get them firmer for longer?

I used to do what your mum does, but stuff went off fairly quickly so now I do what Chulita does.

They do say (whoever 'they' are) that you should keep your veg and fruit in the same way they do in the shop, but we tend to buy our fruit and veg in the market so there are no fridges in evidence.

charlotte it depends how old the carrots are when you buy them I reckon. They definitely don't last as long in the cupboard ime.

I have at room temp:
potatoes
onions
garlic (all of above in special dark bags especially for keeping fresh at room temp)
whole un-trimmed leaks

and if i buy a melon or pineapple or similar large fruit i dont put it in the fridge when whole. (but do it cut or partly used)
also never fridge bananas.

i have a fruit bowl with various fruits in (at room temp obviously)

I get all my fruit and veg from the market each week, so things like spare apples / pears / satsumas and peaches / nectarines etc i keep in a brown bag on my fruit /veg trolley. (unless its very ripe then in fridge)
I keep berries / cherries in the fridge, and (if i remember) get out a few hours before eating so eat at room temp.

also any larger veg that dont fit in my fridge so easily (that im using within 3 days or so) go on the trolley
say swede / carrots / parsnips / cauliflower etc

If I go away for a few days then (if there is room) i move all fruit and veg from my bowl / veg trolley (except bananas) into the fridge (if theres space)

In the dark at room temp

potatoes
onions
leeks
garlic
sweed
turnip
carrots (in cooler weather)

Every thing else I store in the fridge. I store carrots in the fridge in the summer because they keep a bit longer. I store most fruit in the fridge too. I only keep bananas, citrus fruit and larger fruit like melons at room temperature.

We only have fresh berries in season because we have them in the garden. The one we don't grow and I do buy is strawberries. Out of season I buy frozen soft fruit. I can't believe what they charge for a handful of blueberries or raspberries in the shops.

Hmm, interesting.

We get our veg from local farmer as a veg box so never know what we are going to get.

Until now I have been keeping it in the cellar but the potatoes sprout. Does it matter if there is fresh air getting in and around the veg?

Normally I keep things in the bunker which has a window but the door is kept closed. (we are not weirdy people worried about atomic bombs, we live in Switzerland where everyone has a bunker)

My mother swears by her funny green mat from Lakeland.

Potatoes just can't help themselves and will sprout eventually wherever you keep them.

I think in warmer weather pots do sprout. We eat less in the summer anyway so I tend to buy as we need. Things like that do need to be kept cool as well as in the dark.

I use Lakeland type green bags sometimes in the fridge for lettuce etc.
