Calling cake makers- what is that lovely light sponge that is used in a lot of professional birthday cakes?

It is not maderia as I know that is a firmer sponge..I am thinking it is genoese but wanted to check before I attempt to make one for my my friend's little girl

This is difficult because I am thinking that the professional ones are probably made from a commercial cake mix of some kind which will be difficult for you to copy. A genoese is normally a light and airy cake with less butter in it. It seems like a cross between a victoria sponge and a madiera cake.

I used one very similar to this from the Nigella Lawson domestic goddess book. I think the secret is in the buttermilk. I think it tastes very much like a commercial birthday cake.
