hi

asked dh to buy some potatoes, he came back with diddy charlotte potatoes, silly me for not specifiying which ones i needed....

whats the easiest way to make mash out of them for my fish pie? boil them whole and then peel? or does it matter if theresbits of peel in it? Blush or am i resigned to just sitting there with a peeler for the rest of teh afternoon....(ok maybe it won't take quite that long but it feels like it just looking at the tiny things!)

thanks!

Does it have to be topped with mash? How about topping with sliced potato? Then there is no need to peel.

thanks tortoise i never thought of that, i will give it a try, itll be nice for a change as well :)

Cook them first then peel off the skins, much easier

How was it?

i was in exactly the same predicament even down to the dh shopping skills! i cooked and then mashed them with peels on. I called it 'rustic mash' and actually, it was really tasty. sorry i didn't see your post til now OP, hope your dinner was good

hello

it was nice and am glad i tried it- thank you. i think it would work well as a variation on shepherds pie too. i do like the sound of rustic mash too, must give that a try! hippyhippopotamus your post about how you came about this made me Grin!!

he has tried a similar trick a few times. the best was when i asked for a tin of golden syrup and i got a pack of dried spaghetti Hmm
i think he's hoping that if he messes up enough times, that i'll stop asking him to go to the shops. he's got another think coming, its never going to happen Grin

cook then cut in half/quarters then shove through a potato ricer - it depeels for you

Glad worked out well. It's great on shepherds/cottage pie, that's what made me think of it for your fish pie!

I can't remember the last time I peeled a potato. I always leave the skins on, makes it more tasty. Grin

Rustic mash seems to be popular! Am loooking forward to trying it next time. Just so I can fully widen my potato topping repertoire, for those of you who peel post boiling, is there a good way to get the peel off without getting sticky hands? This is why I usually peel before boiling but I know people who peel after so there must be something I'm getig wrong!
