how do you store garlic bulbs so that they dont get that musty smell that you can taste when they are cooked/used?

before i buy them i have to squash them and sniff them to make sure they dont smell musty! i hate it but DP doesnt get what i mean and thinks i'm weird!!!

Mine don't last long enough to go musty but I just bung them in a bowl on my window sill.

Not really sure how you are supposed to store garlic.

I keep them in a garlic container here although not quite like that one

everyday garlic I usually open up into cloves and leave it like that, but we go through at least 3 bulbs a week

I cant say i have ever noticed a musty smell or taste. If they are big clove i take the inner stalk bit out as it doesn't taste nice and can be a bit bitter but i've never noticed any other type of nasty taste.

We use several bulbs a week too so maybe they don't get a chance to go musty.

i've never noticed a musty smell/taste to garlic. We grow our own and i plait them together and they are hung up in the kitchen (which is cool with little natural light). We're just getting to the end of the lot we harvested last July and the last few bulbs are too soft to use.
It does depend a lot on the type of garlic as to how long it keeps though. I grew three varieties and one lot in particular needed to be used before the others as it doesn't have a long life after being harvested.
It's probably impossible to identify the particular strain of garlic when you're buying from the shops though.

We have a small vented garlic pot for keeping the cloves in once we've cracked a bulb open. I find if you split them all apart they go soft much quicker, so i try to just separate the cloves i need from the bulb leaving the rest intact.

Keeping them cool (but not cold) and away from strong light is important for freshness.

Garlic tastes horrible when it's burnt / overcooked, that's more likely causing a funny taste OP.

I have never noticed a musty smell tbh. I always take out the green shoot in the middle (I have no idea why, it is just a routine I blindly follow).

I never keep garlic for very long, though. And I always buy it from an Indian grocer, as the garlic from supermarkets is crap, and the Indian garlic cloves are fat and juicy.

I've never noticed a musty smell, but garlic doesn't last long in our house!

It's so good for you I'd be tempted to look up more recipies including garlic

I cannot find a store in my area that sells garlic that does not have the musty smell. It ruined tonite's dinner of Greek Chicken and
potatoes. I am sick of what they are doing to our foods! The garlic doesn't even smell of garlic, just of mustiness!

I tend to use English provender Lazy Garlic in a jar Blush
