I want to eat something really savoury. Everything I can think of is too sweet. Even potatoes - too sweet.

What's reckoned to be completely savoury?

Isn't there a Japanese word for it? Something like unagi?

Umami. Have some Marmite on toast.

umami is what you're looking for... and I think Marmite on toast is the most umami thing in the world <dribbles>

YunoYurbubson Mon 03-Jan-11 12:14:34

Mmmmmm marmite. But bread is a bit sweet.

headfairy Mon 03-Jan-11 12:14:44

ha great minds!

Waitrose sells Umami paste, a bit like tomato puree but with other things in like parmesan - it's yummy in pasta sauce etc

headfairy Mon 03-Jan-11 12:15:45

marmite off a spoon!

coldtits Mon 03-Jan-11 12:17:42

Beef jerky.

YunoYurbubson Mon 03-Jan-11 12:21:21

Oh parmesan yes. Yum. But am dairy free ATM thanks to ds's eczema.

I get salty and umami confused as I love them both.

My favourite savoury things ( when I am not weight watching ) are:

- smoked mackerel
- balsamic vinegar
- balsamic vinegar crisps ( I know! )
- salt and vinegar peanuts ( yes, yes...)
- marmite
- anchovies
- streaky bacon or pancetta
- goats cheese

Parmesan would be it - or get some potatoes and sprinkle with msg like it is salt.

BornToFolk Mon 03-Jan-11 12:42:57

Twiglets.

otchayaniye Mon 03-Jan-11 13:01:18

marmite pasta?

Neck loads of msg - that's umami.

MissQue Mon 03-Jan-11 13:07:07

Meat. Lots of Meat grin

Anchovies are delicious melted in butter and drizzled onto broccoli. Have that with a soft-poached egg?

taffetacat Mon 03-Jan-11 15:04:31

oh yes. rare roast beef. with salt. mmmmmm

YunoYurbubson Mon 03-Jan-11 15:05:00

Lol. Funnily enough I don't keep a packet of MSG in the cupboard.

And the meat or anchovy idea sounds spot on, but I am a veggie. Yes, a dairy free veggie looking for the ultimate Umami.

I had some egg and rice drowned in chilli pickle. Didn't really hit the spot but at least I'm not hungry now.

And another thing, soy sauce, has it always been so sweet. I remembered it as salty and savoury. The bottle I have in my cupboard is so sweet.

taffetacat Mon 03-Jan-11 15:07:07

soy, schmoy. get the balsamic out

IAmTheCookieMonster Mon 03-Jan-11 15:08:02

Pepperamis!

When I was pregnant I couldn't stand anything remotely sweet, pepperamis were the only thing that stopped my morning sickness, but then I read that you can't eat salami, and later found out that they are pasteurised so fine - after the sickness had stopped :-(

Umami Mon 03-Jan-11 15:16:15

Did someone call? grin

I think the most delicious savoury umami stuff is the fabulous brown goo you get in the pan after roasting a chicken.

There's even an umami website

Umami Mon 03-Jan-11 15:17:57

Oh, sorry blush, only just noticed you're a veggie. Chicken not a lot of help blush

piprabbit Mon 03-Jan-11 15:18:33

Twiglets?

Very strong cheddar cheese?

piprabbit Mon 03-Jan-11 15:19:42

Oops sorry about the cheese thing.

Umami Mon 03-Jan-11 15:20:17

Ah, yes! Mushrooms! Website says shiitake. I reckon porcini also. A mixture of delicious mushrooms fried and on toast. Mmmmmmmmm.

YunoYurbubson Mon 03-Jan-11 15:20:21

I like the umami website though!
