They've exploded in the pan and all around the oven! I scored them round the middle like I usually do...

Did you get them flown in from Yemen?

Cyb - there really is no discernable trace of apple - it's all mush...in the pan.... over the oven. Still, meant that I actually got round to cleaning the oven Grin.
Marchpane - LOL!

Did you score a line round the apple with a knife? Allows the flesh inside to expand. Same with spuds.

Also lol @Marchpane.

We've recently had a new kitchen put in, following fairly extensive building works with limited cooking facilities. Of course we had an oven in our old kitchen but once the new kitchen was installed, DH (who does most of the cooking - and chose the cooker, probably because it's what a manly man would use) embarked upon a cooking spree. Which included baked apples. We both looked at his first offering with downcast eyes, because explosion was the only way to describe it. Then we both remembered the age-old strategy that others have mentioned.

Subsequent efforts have been interesting but mostly ameliorated by liberal application of cream (which my DH isn't supposed to consume because of the cholerestol - but he does most of the shopping so not my fault). He's also discovered the phenomenon known as frozen pastry.

So my advice is to attack the apples, wrap the remains in pastry, bung them in the oven and retreat. Then scrape off whatever looks edible, smother that in whatever you fancy, and then get someone in to clean the oven. Rinse and repeat.

Mine exploded too last night! Never happened before but got a new fan assisted oven. Going to be turning down the heat next time! They were still tasty though :)

Did you wrap them in foil and score them before that? Little buggers get hot.
