My ds has been asking for a pet, so we decided for his 4th birthday in a couple of months to get him one or two fish. I thought of gold fish but after reading up o realise they are completely the wrong choice. We can't afford nor do we have the space for a tank the size they need. I wasn't aware that they can't go in a small aquarium, so glad i read up would hate to cause unnecessary distress to a poor fish! So mu question to you is, we are looking to buya tank thats around 24l, what fish could we put in? I don't expect nor want it to hold a lot, i was looking at rosy barbs bit my friend said they need to be kept in fairly large groups. Help!

I would say though, that the smaller the tank the harder it is to keep the ecosystem stable.

Regardless of tank size you will need a filter and possibly a heater depending on your country, the tank also needs to be set up with water and starter for a few weeks before adding fish, again in order to stabilise the ecosystem.

Regular water testing, feeding and water changes that you will need to be able to commit to, apologies if you already know all this, many don't!

I would look into getting a single siamese fighting fish. Beautiful to look at and suitable for your tank size. You could also add a couple of shrimps.

I'd second siamese fighter. We recently set up a 20l Betta tank and he has way more character than any other fish we have kept and is really beautiful.
