No idea what happened there...

Today's the day I was meant to be moving the goldfish from their 21litre tank to their 125 litre tank but after 30 minutes fiddling with the filter I have found out I can't add my old filter material to it. The old filter used white fabric and carbon In a net bag with black ball things and white cyclinders whereas this one is a piece of sponge fitted to the inside of the filter.
Everytime I put the filter material in the whole thing won't turn on but once I take it out its fine. I've tried cutting it to smaller pieces and changing the positioning but It just won't take the other filter material.
Should have got a better filter but it's a fish r fun filter as is my old one.
This ones really really noisy too ?
What should I do?
Fish won't be going in tonight but they need to this week.

And now the plastic plants are floating around but there's no way of controlling the current

Can you put the old filter in the new tank and run them side by side while the new filter colonises?

No the other filters built in to the other tanks lid. Been trying to work out if I can use suction cups but it doesn't look like they would go anywhere, wondering if I should just take the new filter back and ask if the shop will change it but the interpret filter (only other make they had) also uses sponges so may not work either. There's a little bag of carbon in the old filter, would floating it in the tank work?

sounds like you went to the pet shed

have you used conditioned water in the new tank? and are both now running or just one of them?

if the waters been treated to remove chlorine and your not in a chloramine added area you could add the old water to the new to get as much bacteria moved over.

is the old tank a small bowl? any way if the new sponge was cut in two you could have it in the output flow of the existing filter?

dont worry about the plants for now, they are not going anywhere and can be left out the tank until the issue of the filtration is resolved.

We thought getting everything second hand would be cheaper...it wasn't.
They're in a 21litre tank with light + filter. I now have both tanks running.
My partner thinks he can cable tie the old filter to the top bar of the new tank so we will try that tonight. It's not fully submersible so hoping it doesn't fall in.
Will move fish once I know if it's safe, tonight hopefully. If not I Can re-attach it to the old tank.
The waters nice and clear in the new tank and I've worked out not to aim the spray bar down or everything gets blown about so hopefully I'm getting somewhere.

One filter cable tied and one is finally in place after a stressful couple of hours. The filter isn't adjustable so have fiddled with the positioning and the only way to stop the fish getting blown around was to position it at the top with the bar facing the nearest wall.
It's so strong but it's the right size for the tank so possibly the fish are a bit small? Either way, it's done :)
