explain please

Enid Wed 13-Jul-05 00:06:36

ending is cheesey

but the first hour or so is utterly terrifying

I am never going to the cinema again

JoolsToo Wed 13-Jul-05 00:11:06

the chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one they say ....

wheresmyfroggy Wed 13-Jul-05 00:13:21

about the same odds as winning the lottery and people do every week Jools

lou33 Wed 13-Jul-05 00:15:51

i really enjoyed it, had some v dark moments

Enid Wed 13-Jul-05 00:21:19

cant believe its a 12

or am I just an oldie?

lou33 Wed 13-Jul-05 00:27:20

the blood scene was pretty grim, i agree, and the part where he shut himself in the cellar with tim robbins....

but the girl who plays his daughter, thought she was fantastic

Enid Wed 13-Jul-05 10:01:13

had a nightmare last night

am still traumatised

WideWebWitch Wed 13-Jul-05 10:02:01

I can't believe it's a 12 either

Enid Wed 13-Jul-05 10:02:49

its the same cert as Batman which is much much less scary IMO

lou33 Wed 13-Jul-05 10:02:58

did you really enid?

Enid Wed 13-Jul-05 10:04:08

honestly did. It wasn't actually about War of the worlds as such but I felt anxious all night

I know I am pathetic and I don't get out much but I genuinely found it deeply unsettling

and it was so loud!

WideWebWitch Wed 13-Jul-05 10:06:08

enid, Spielberg does the scared family stuff very well, I thought War of the Worlds was very unsettling from that pov and I wanted to hug the little girl and protect her.

lou33 Wed 13-Jul-05 10:07:20

i think the bit that disturbed me most if all was when he walked into the cellar to deal with Tim Robbins, and the girl was singing to herself with the noises in the background.

Not enough to have nightmares tho, but a few films have done that to me, Saw in particular, i had to leave halfway through, it was too much for me

Enid Wed 13-Jul-05 10:07:27

did love the fact that they didnt even show that huge battle with the army and all you were worried about was the little girl.

Ace.

WideWebWitch Wed 13-Jul-05 10:08:56

absolutely, and wanted to wring the boy's neck and tell the dad to just get his girl QUICK!

lou33 Wed 13-Jul-05 10:19:55

yes that was v well done

Bugsy2 Wed 13-Jul-05 12:53:37

Was terrified for most of this film. Covered in a sheen of nervous sweat by the time I left. No way would I let a 12yr old go & see it. Haven't slept well since seeing it. Keep thinking how absurdly fragile the human race is.
Ending was dire - despite being shaky from sustained terror, it made me want to be sick.
Should just add that I am a girly lightweight about scary films and memories of Silence of the Lambs still give me goosebumps.

Princessemma Wed 13-Jul-05 16:10:14

I was terrified there was no pause for you to get your breath back. My husband said it wasn't that scary!!! I too was traumatised by this film!!!

sheepgomeep Sat 16-Jul-05 22:50:57

It gave me nightmares too!! I couldn't stop thinking about all the blood and the scene with Tim Robbins. Found that very disturbing.

No way that should have been a 12. i saw some 6 and 7 year olds in there when I went. They were terrified.

Really liked this. Speilberg just has the best resourses and the best cinematographer in the world. Also thought it was very redolent of a few things that have been happening in recent years, 9/11 (people emerging covered in ash) 'shock and 'awe' the plane crashing sequence - really scary and made me think of how utterly terrifying it must have been for Iraqi families caught in the middle of it. Really well made. Tom Cruise was my least favourite thing about it.

DP and i went to see this film tonight and we were both terrified & traumatised. i found some scenes with the little girl very disturbing. we could not believe this was a 12 cert and even more shocked that someone on MN said she'd taken a 5 year old to see this. DP actually hurt my hand from squeezing it so hard from being scared and he's used to watching sci-fi and horror films (as am i). wish i had never seen it TBH. i needed a sniff drink afterwards!

We have this on DVD (shhhhhh) was going to watch it tonight, but I dont think I will bother now as I am on my own.
