i feel cheated.

they changed character names.

they left out loads (which i expected as its a big book)

they changed storylines.

They changed the ending. which was pants. and rubbish.

Changing the ending is always a bad thing because it manages to ruin a book as well as wrecking the film!

Changed the ending?

Thats no good.

The book was very thought provoking, wont be going to see it now.

how can they change the ending? everyone must know how it ends in the book?

Report
PortAndLemon · 01/07/2009 08:59

I assume that's why they changed it -- so you still get a sense of surprise. But changing most of what people liked about the book seems distinctly odd if you're trying to make a successful movie.

I've yet to see a film that was even half as good as a good book, so although I loved this book, (and cried throughout) I'll give the fillum a miss I think, and preserve my blubby memories!

Thanks for the review I will save my money for another film.

aunt zanne is now kelly .

jesse is not what he is in the book.

anna doesnt die.

julia isnt in it

fortunatly it was cheap cinema day, so only wasted £4.90

a lot of disappointed people in the cinema last night.

Changing the ending is ridiculous imo... That's the only thing that stopped it being a mediocre book ...

Good grief, not much of the book left from the sound of it

A friend of mine went to a book signing with Jodie Picoult and was she was talking about how they had changed the ending. Even though she was the author she did not have the right to tell them to leave it as it should be (something to do with the rights etc). It is like making a movie about the titanic and it not sinking.

dh tld me not to see it as i would be disappointed and moan about it, like i always do after seeing films based on books.

can't believe they changed the end, how bizarre

I agree,Tillyscoutsmum, the only memorable bit of the book

The major twist in the book and they changed it... was very gutted tbh, its what made the book, the ending, coz you are not expecting it..

Report
PortAndLemon · 01/07/2009 11:10

I suppose their thoughts may have been that
(a) the ending in the book was good because people weren't expecting it
(b) everyone will have read the book and be expecting that ending, so it won't be good any more
(c) so we'll give them a different ending that they aren't expecting and that will be good again

Which is, of course, the danger of designing films by committee...

well i went to see it last night not having read the book and i think it was absolutley fantastic, i blubbed all the way through and had to stop myself sobbing uncontrollably! I think it was made in a way as to touch your heart and break it as if you were in the film.

What happens in the book then? i presume the sister donates her kidney and dies?

Report
PortAndLemon · 01/07/2009 11:17

Not exactly -- the sister sues for the right not to donate her kidney (for reasons as given in the movie) but then after winning her case is knocked down by a car and dies. Her kidney is then donated to the elder sister anyway (the guardian bloke gets to decide) and the elder sister does pull through the surgery and live (because, she thinks, Anna took her place in heaven).

So what happens in the film now?
I'm not shelling out a tenner to see a poor film of a mediocre book, but I'd still like to know!!

Report
BONKERZ · 01/07/2009 11:23

oh blimey....thanks god that was not the ending in the film because i swear i would have broken down!

Report
PortAndLemon · 01/07/2009 11:25

In the film now

...SPOILER...

...SPOILER...

Anna doesn't donate her kidney (because, as in the book, Kate doesn't want her to because she is ready to die and doesn't think she'd survive the surgery anyway), Kate dies, and the rest of the family start to rebuild their lives.

(I think. I haven't actually seen it)

That is a shite (film) ending! The shock ending of the book was it's only redeeming feature!

That is a stupid ending. But I wasn't going to see it anyway, so thanks for summarising for me

If I'm going to be the sole source of information for so many people on the film ending, I wish I'd got more creative.

In the film now

...SPOILER...

...SPOILER...

Anna decides not to donate the kidney, but aliens from the planet Zarg arrive on Earth and heal Kate using their wonderous Freem Ray. Then they take the whole family with them on a voyage across the galaxy to Zarg, where they learn the secrets of the universe and emerge as happier and wiser people. However, by the time they get back to Earth something has gone Terribly Wrong and it is inhabited by hyper-evolved super-intelligent chimpanzees.
