It looks beautiful - who knew Salford in the early 80s was so gorgeous? - but I don't think it really works.. You already know the ending and it doesn't really shed much (extra) light on why he did it..
That said, heaps of critics loved it. Although I think outside the UK reviews were a bit more lukewarm..

We went to see it at a little independant cinema and it was bloody brilliant I have to say - really sad, but still a great film and I'm not usually a big lover of 'biopics'.

I am a Joy Division fan though which probably helps.

great film - loads of people didn't like but I thought it was brilliantly acted and beautifully filmed. Watch it!

really good and engaging but a bit depressing. Also the film refuses to take sides and that makes it even more depressing imo (ability of people to get themselves into emotional messes)
I'd only recommend it if you like the music
