Suggestions for scary movies appropriate for a 6 year old?

My 6 year old son is obsessed with horror characters and scary movies. We are running out of appropriate movies to show him.

He has seen ghostbusters, goosebumps, witches, hocus pocus, goonies, beetlejuice, monster squad

He never found any of the above scary enough.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions. We haven't seen most of them so I'll add them to our list for movie nights.

Why do I need to investigate him enjoying the thrill of a scary movie? I'm just looking for age appropriate ones which wouldn't be around if there wasn't other kids out there who like a bit of scary too.

The Last Unicorn is pretty terrifying... really! I still find it scary as an adult!

Have you tried studio Ghibli?
Spirited Away is quite scary and features lots of interesting 'monsters'

You could try the old 'Are you afraid of the dark?' Series.
Also 'a series of unfortunate events'
'Round The Twist'

Old haunted house films like The Haunting.

The Canterville Ghost from 1996

And old sci fis can be pretty scary like The Creature from the Black Lagoon
Quatermass and the Pit is actually terrifying.

12 certificate films theres lots.... The Others, Woman in Black, Sphere.... but perhaps those might be a bit too scary at 6.... in the next few years they might be okay though?

I'm not sure that this is something you should be encouraging to be honest. Very few of those films are actually appropriate for a six year old. He may enjoy the "thrill" of feeling scared, but they're planting all sorts of dark thoughts into a very young and impressionable mind and you cannot predict what they are doing in there or how they might come out.

What about dark fantasy such as Willow or Princess Bride? Nightmare before Christmas, Harry Potter and fantastic beasts (I wouldn’t do deathly hallows yet - it’s easier to fast foward bits if they get scary than stop reading) the mummy, stargate, Indiana Jones and pirates of the Caribbean.

The mummy is actually quite graphic... just thought I'd mention that as its initial tone makes it seem like a kids film but theres some brutal scenes in it that certainly would not be okay for a 6yo. Theres one but where a man gets his eyes eaten whilst hes still aliveif I remember correctly. Then graphic scenes of a man being eaten alive by beetles... and the CGI is quite good so it's a bit grim.
I cant remember if it's a 12 but I think if it's not it should be!

Spirited Away is a 12, more because of the storyline of girl who loses parents and has to make her own way than for any monster per se; though there are weird dangerous creatures throughout. Maybe try before you show, but I wouldn't deem it harmful to a 6yr old.

When I did teacher training, I read Coraline in prep for yr7 lessons. I think its more scary as an adult/parent as you experience more of the what-could-have-been than children normally do.

Pirates of the Caribbean is also a 12 - probs more for blood and innuendo than the horror aspect.

The first Hobbit movie has goblins, that are treated with a degree of comedy, and Orcs that are not. The last movie of the trilogy is a bit of a bloodbath at the end (esp the extended version); so you may want to bear that in mind in case he wants to see the whole tale.

Dredging one up form the past - my fave movie at 7 or 8 was Krull. Not entirely horror, more fantasy, but should be ok. Legend is a good alternate too - though there are multiple versions/cuts of this.

My little dark soul DD loved Coraline at 6. And nightmare before Christmas! Frankenweenie is another dark weird one, and the Isle of dogs is another dark weirdy film.

Return to Oz is scary. The Wheelers and that lady who takes her head off!
It's a children's film, with a young Fairuza Baulk as Dorothy.
Watched it for the first time as an adult with DCs when they were 6 & 8. Scared the shit out of all 3 of us! DD still won't watch it again, and she's 12!
